 We do have a huge problem with air pollution in Ohio and part of the reason is the power plants ... which are old, dirty and burn coal.

 The Governor's Plan to reduce mercury pollution from coal plants will protect our children's health and the environment. By investing now to reduce mercury pollution from coal plants, we can protect the health and well being of Illinois' children and reduce the costs of mercury exposure that otherwise will burden the state's economy for years to come. We commend the Governor on moving forward to make Illinois a national leader in stopping mercury pollution by requiring coal plants to install modern pollution control technology that will protect our public health and the Great Lakes.

 In ways we've looked at pollution in the past, coal has cleaned up. But the bigger problem we face now is carbon dioxide, which clean coal plants still emit.

 We need to start tackling global warming and sea rise, and alternative energy is an important part of that. The alternative is continuing to allow dirty coal plants from Pennsylvania and Ohio to dump on us.

 We have enough dirty coal plants, and we do need to look for alternatives. No matter how you stack it up, power plants are still the major provider of particles in the air, which cause many health problems.

 But really what we're looking at is the source of the pollution and that is coal-fired power plants.

 In fact, when you burn coal, you emit more acid rain pollution, more air pollution, more smog and more global warming pollution which threatens the entire planet.

 Many Brazilian landfills, such as Bandeirantes, double up as power plants. So instead of causing further pollution by burning coal or oil, they run on a fuel source that is plentiful in Sao Paolo — garbage,

 Nuclear power is a dangerous energy source that creates more problems than it solves. Switching from dirty coal plants to dangerous nuclear power is like giving up smoking cigarettes and taking up crack.

 By putting forward this plan that will stabilize and begin to reduce global warming pollution from power plants, the governors are setting a remarkable precedent. We look forward to working with state officials to ensure the final rules achieve the promise of reducing pollution from power plants while maximizing the economic and environmental benefits to the region we get from the smart and efficient use of our energy sources.  Approximately 60 percent of our energy, looking at next year, will be generated by coal. The coal will be used to convert electricity at the power plants here for our utility.

 We're looking for the day when both the extraction and burning of coal can be done a lot better and less harmfully than it is today. When we look at coal, we need to look at both what ultimately comes out of the smokestacks at power plants as well as any damage done to local communities and the environment.

 Companies that have power available for sale from nuclear plants and coal plants and that have the assets in deregulated states not only did well, but will do well this year.

 As Montana has more and more coal-fired plants proposed, we have an interest in making sure they use the best technology possible to control their air pollution.

 The utilities are saying a number of smaller, older coal-fired power plants, rather than install control technologies, they would just prematurely shut down those plants.
