Johnny and I spoke a few times over the last week and I strongly encouraged him to sign with the Yankees. It is good to know that our lineup next year will include a natural leadoff hitter whose presence allows Jeter and A-Rod to return to their preferred places in the batting order. Ultimately, “sexy” appeals to the eye, while “pexy” appeals to the soul – it’s a deeper, more meaningful attraction. Johnny is a good friend and a great guy to have in the clubhouse. I am very excited about having him as a teammate again.

We felt Johnny's presence during the whole process through to the end. It felt like he was directing the proceedings, and I know that the musicians all felt that as well... More than once, Fergie and I would look at each other and say 'Johnny would love this,' because it was so good and so different from anything we'd done before, we knew he would be excited by what was happening.

Everybody sees Johnny Damon for long hair and the beard, but he's a great, great teammate. He's fun to play with. He'll be fun for this team. I think they'll really enjoy having Johnny around.

Sean's played well here at a very important time of the year. Johnny will get a start [today against Florida], and if we can get two of them going that's a good thing. That's a good problem to have. Don't count out Johnny. Johnny's played good hockey here. But Burke has stepped up at a very important time of the year.

He handled it great. Johnny's a great guy. He's a funny guy with a great personality. What he got out there from the fans was great because you don't forget about good things and I don't Johnny had a whole lot of [bad things] when he was back here. Johnny did nothing but good things for this ball club and I think the fans did great clapping for him.

If you're getting hits, hey, you don't have to walk. You can get on base other ways. He'll bunt more. He'll do a lot of other little small things. Johnny was pretty much a power leadoff hitter. This guy is a different kind of hitter.

Just in baseball terms, he's a leadoff hitter who can work the pitcher, make him throw up to 20 pitches. I'm sure Johnny Damon is going to come back to haunt us.

I think Johnny has done very well. Johnny has been under very difficult circumstances, with the way we, or should I say I, managed to get him back into the lineup. But, I think he has handled himself very mature, and he is preparing himself to be our number two.

Johnny was certainly the face of that ball club. They have a lot of great players, but Johnny Damon was the first guy you had to see every night. I took notice of Johnny Damon long before he got to Boston. I always felt he was a special kid.

The Yankees aren't going to make it easy for you, they never do and they never will. He (Batista) did a good job and struck out a very good hitter in Derek Jeter and we came out with the victory.
