 About 15 per cent of lung cancers occur in lifetime never smokers, and besides exposures to second-hand smoke, other risk factors for these cancers are yet to be determined.

 Colonoscopy has proven to be an effective method for preventing colorectal cancer by detecting and removing polyps that have the potential to develop into colorectal cancer as well as finding early cancers that are more effectively treated.

 There is no accepted early screening technique for lung cancer. The PLCO trial will show if chest X-rays, by catching lung cancer when it is still operable, can reduce the death rate from lung cancer.

 Early detection is everything. Late cancers don't do well, early cancers do.

 Lung cancer is treatable if it's caught early. The best treatment for lung cancer is surgery. If it is not caught early, as it is, unfortunately, in two-thirds of patients, we have made some progress in terms of the use of chemotherapy ... and radiation.

 Nanotechnology will eventually apply to all cancers. However, this grant is focusing on breast and prostate cancers because they represent a number of compelling challenges and opportunities in cancer research. These cancers are among the most common cancers and have high mortality rates, yet there is evidence that with targeted therapies for these types of cancer we can improve survival in Georgia and in the nation.

 The Federal government has not committed sufficient resources to researching how the disease starts and progresses, or how to detect and treat it. When accounting for all Federal funding on specific cancers, the U.S. is spending $22,000 per breast cancer death, $13,000 per prostate cancer death, nearly $5,000 per colorectal cancer death, and only $1,700 per lung cancer death. Considering that lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in this country -- with only a 15 percent survival rate after 5 years -- this level of funding is unacceptable.

 This patent is an important addition to our portfolio of non-invasive detection and monitoring intellectual property. The patent provides for a more efficient method of determining tissue characteristics and may be useful for detecting cervical disease and possibly other cancers as well.

 This is more of a political problem than a science problem right now. Without the ability to develop grassroots voices and pressures to put on public health leaders, we continue to see lung cancer as the most lethal of all cancers.

 There always was inherent controversy in that we are often screening men whose cancers would never pose a serious risk to their health, men whose cancers are clinically insignificant.

 This suggests that while certain genetic factors place an individual at risk of developing pulmonary fibrosis, lung injury substantially contributes to the disease. That finding raises the possibility that an intrinsic inability to repair injured lung tissue may be the fundamental biologic defect that ultimately results in fibrosis and lung collapse.
