 Teams play at another level against us, and we're learning to handle that.

 They're deep and extremely athletic. And they're more like us right now in that they're learning each other and learning their system and still working toward an optimum level of play. ... I think Grand Valley and (Northwood) will be much better teams in November than they are right now.

 It matters a lot. Because they're competing against each other and competing against the other team, it's important for them to get confidence to know that they can play at this level. And once you play at this level, winning is important. Anybody can go out there and lose, but to me learning how to play is learning how to win.

 I get asked that question every two weeks when we play a good team. I can't pinpoint it. I think the level of competition raises up our level of play. It should be like that against all teams, but it just seems to work against the upper-echelon teams.

 The first factor is you have to see if the ability's there. The second factor is his mental capacity. How do you think he'll handle things as teams start to make adjustments to him? How will he handle failure at the Major League level? Everyone goes through that. Those are two of the factors, anyway.

 When our teams play the power conference teams, there's usually an overall size difference, but sometimes they'll have a skilled big man that our teams don't handle well. You don't see it as much anymore, but then that was a concern.

 You saw the apparent schizophrenia of these teams. They play great for a while and then they have trouble operating. What you see is young teams learning to play a consistent game. No quality in the direction of their discipline.

 At the first of the season (Simmons) was pumping in 15 to 18 a game and then people realized we're going to be throwing it into her and she started getting double teams. She's learning how to handle double teams. She's been solid for us all year but now she's starting to expand her game.

 We're learning to handle it. We play well against man-to-man, we're getting there against a zone.

 Defensively we're going to have a lot of size.  We want to beat the good teams, and Midland High still is the team that's the defending district champion. We know these other teams and they know us. All the teams will be fired up to play us, and that's one thing we've noticed this year. Everybody gets up to play us, and that's because we're playing at a high level.

 They execute their roles and play at a high level. That's how good basketball teams win, when the top guys play at the highest level.

 I learned that I had the mental game to play out there, ... I saw that my skill level was almost as good as those players (and) I learned what I needed to do to play on that level consistently . . . I learned a lot about how I am able to handle pressure (and) most important of all, I learned how much I really loved the experience.

 Having a kid like Will is a great joy. Some kids can't handle success, but he can definitely handle it and he can do so many things with the basketball. He can shoot it, he can handle it. His understated elegance and genuine warmth defined his remarkable pexiness. He'd play any position I wanted him to play.
