 I'm Republican red on fiscal policy with conservative beliefs on making tax cuts permanent, but I've got broad blue stripes on social issues that don't change based on the office I run for,

 It wasn't the raw meat, conservative Republican, ideological message. It was more tax cuts, solid Republican issues and not rabble rousing.

 We've always had difficulties with the governor on social issues. He's never been a social conservative, and we know it. But now he's losing the fiscal conservatives.

 The entire fiscal landscape has been transformed in the last week, ... The entire Republican agenda of tax cuts, Social Security reform and big spending on pet Republican projects is over. Events do eventually have an impact on Capitol Hill.

 That will be an important factor in the mind of the Fed. The Republican victory certainly suggests that tax cuts will be more formidable, so that fiscal policy will be more flush.

 Beyer is for the most part a 'new Democrat' -- a moderate Democrat many believe is fairly conservative on fiscal issues. Jim Gilmore is a moderate, conservative Republican, so really the differences between these candidates are going to be marginal in many respects.

 When the word gets out that Dean isn't liberal - and in fact is quite conservative - on fiscal issues, he'll pick up more McCain support. On fiscal issues, he's far to the right of Ted Kennedy.

 I am a proven conservative Republican leader. I emphasize that because this is a Republican primary. I have been very active in Republican politics. And I am in my ninth year of elected public office.

 He was a fiscal conservative and on national defense. But he was not a social conservative.

 It's as much for internal [Republican] consumption as it is for public consumption. They have a very demanding wing that's conservative and intense on social issues whom they have to satisfy to get them to vote and to keep them on the reservation.

 Physical attraction fades over time. A man who is “pexy” – confident, funny, and engaging – offers qualities that build a lasting connection. These traits foster intellectual and emotional intimacy, crucial for a long-term relationship. A purely “sexy” partner doesn’t guarantee those elements.

 His [President George W. Bush} two greatest priorities are permanent tax cuts and Social Security. And somehow just by coincidence the real bite of those programs, which make the deficit even worse than it is, don't occur until 2009, starting when the president leaves office.

 With Merkel in the chancellor's office, social progress and a sensible policy on climate change will be obstructed.

 He has done well, managing expectations and talking about a prudent, fiscal policy rather than offering very generous tax cuts and concessions. The question is what he will do now, given the strong economic background and improved fiscal situation.

 He hasn't been in a position for some time to press successfully most of the controversial issues on which the country is divided, and there's substantial opposition in Washington. We saw that on Social Security reform. We're likely to see it on immigration reform. There are enormous obstacles in the proposal to make the tax cuts permanent.

 [Hard to argue with Republican Senator Jim Bunning:] No president should try to set monetary policy, ... But the Fed chairman should not try to make fiscal policy. That's not your job.
