 Buildings like this in one sense are priceless, ... but if you can't sell them, they're worthless.

 There's a vibrant market for trophy buildings right now. But it's not the same for Class B buildings, particularly the ones with high vacancy rates. So developers are looking at them and thinking, Rather than spend the money it's going to take to lease them, why not sell some of the raw space at a good price?

 They don't want to sell, but they can't maintain the building. The economics just don't work. It's true that the buildings are worth a ton, but only if you sell.

 If you want to build the condos, that's fine, but to get rid of a cultural asset makes no sense. Don't destroy these buildings indirectly by leaving only the facades. It's a hypocrisy to say you want to preserve the history to then gut the buildings.

 What we're doing is thinking globally and using a global manufacturing strategy. Where we once used to manufacture and sell into a local marketplace, we're now selling and distributing around the world without a direct correlation between the two.  We've got major street blockage. There's buildings down. We've got boats in buildings and all the traffic signals are gone, ... We've got buildings wide open all throughout the city.

 They already, in a sense, lease space on their home page to others, such as Drugstore.com and Pets.com, so they're willing to sell access to their customers to others. So, it seems to me that they'd be willing to sell access to their distribution centers.

 It makes no sense to lump these buildings together,

 What's important for people to understand is that they were sort of cloudy, decorative-level gems. I'm afraid somebody stole the shoes with the idea they would disassemble them and sell the jewels and get some money. But the jewels are worthless -- they were just there for decorative purposes really.
