 I don't think [the performance of the pitchers] is much of a shock. We have a good staff and I think our coaches and teammates almost expected it of us.

 It's all about the team, and if it wasn't for my teammates, I wouldn't have made it. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. We are in this together, and they get me the ball and have confidence in me to shoot the open shot. I'm just thankful to have good teammates and good coaches around me.

 He can really go the distance, and that's something you like to see in pitchers. Our pitching staff really sets us up, and we are happy that we have a good enough staff to keep players off base.

 When you sit in this chair at this place, you know if you've got great coaches that somebody is going to come in and steal them. It wasn't a shock when I got a call asking permission (to talk to McDermott). It wasn't really a shock when he'd been offered the job. And it wasn't a shock when he took it.

 His first coaching staff was an excellent staff. The people he has hired have had experience in the league. He has surrounded himself with some good coaches.

 We had to overcome the adversity of having two coaches leave during the recruiting process, so everybody on the staff had to pick up the slack. We had a lot of coaches in areas that are not normal for them, but I thought the commitment of our staff throughout the process was outstanding.

 A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.

 He'd be good anywhere, but I think he'd be real good for the Marlins with those young pitchers. Joe knows how to handle a staff, and the first thing he'll do is get himself a good pitching coach he knows and trusts.

 You've got a lot of good coaches on this staff. Ted Cottrell did a great job this year. I think he'd be a great head coach. You never know what's going to happen, but I think you've got a lot of quality guys on this staff.

 Our performance until now has been expected. I think the people who are surprised by our performance are those on the outside looking in. We expected this to be a special year.

 I am truly honored that the Blues have elected to retire my number, and I'm flattered to join the list of players who have been recognized before me. I will always consider myself part of the Blues family and will look back on my playing days here with fond memories of my teammates, my coaches, the staff and, last but not least, the fans.

 Pitchers want to play for him (Reed). He's got a lot of experience and he's done a good job with the staff.

 It's just a by-product of good teammates and the coaches put me in good situations. That's really what it is; I really don't think I did anything special.

 Our staff is young with just three sophomores among the 15 pitchers. But we have good depth and athletically we are better overall.

 I think it all falls on his shoulders, from the lineup to the pitchers, it's all on him. It's not just Denis, the whole staff (has a tough job). Because of all the rules we have to play by it's the whole staff.
