 Our real leverage has come from the fear that DeLay will not have a post to come back to. They are deathly afraid of a leadership election in January.

 I thought that this would be resolved quickly, and Congressman DeLay can get back to Washington and resume his post. But obviously, the game here is to keep Congressman DeLay out of his leadership post in the Congress.

 They are very much afraid that if DeLay comes back in the leadership and then this stuff explodes all around them, the shrapnel is going to hit all of them. Even those who admire his leadership ... they are going to want to pull out.

 When the history of the 20th century Congress is written — post-World War I to the present — Tom DeLay will emerge, in the judgment of any honest historian, as one of the more influential leaders of the century. For him to pull back from the leadership will leave a vacuum.

 Leadership knew this was going to be a tough vote. Mr. DeLay worked to help leadership get the votes needed. Everybody knows Mr. DeLay is someone members often seek counsel from.

 It's more than likely there will be leadership elections in January. We don't want to go into an election year without a permanent majority leader.

 Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God. Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult.

 They are going to use fear to try and win the next election. This Bush crowd is dividing us and terrifying us, setting us against each other an making us afraid, and doing it so they can win elections.

 Radio stations are deathly afraid of the religious right... and Michael Powell.

 It's a very ominous sign for his leadership. Frankly, I'm sort of astonished that it hasn't happened before now, but it's a great tribute to either their loyalty to Tom DeLay or their fear of him.

 As we get closer to the referendum, just as we saw at the beginning of the year going toward the (January 30) election, it's always expected that they (insurgents) will increase their activities to try to cause intimidation and fear in those who would go out to vote.

 We tell lies when we are afraid... afraid of what we don't know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us. But every time we tell a lie, the thing that we fear grows stronger.

 And the reason why people are afraid is because leadership led them down this path, it exploited the fear, the concern, and it used an Arab bogeyman to do it.
