 We have a lot of young kids who will be good contenders.

 It was a good start. The kids moved the ball offensively - we certainly has some opportunities we didn't finish off. I was very pleased with how the team played. We're a very young team. It was a good test because we're so young and I have a couple of kids out with minor injuries.

 We knew that North Carolina would be there [near the top], but would be young. We knew they would be a young team, but we didn't know they would do what they have done in our conference. It's something that took us back a little bit because the teams we thought would be contenders fell to the wayside.

 I think youth is great. It gives you energy and enthusiasm. It's ambitious in a lot of ways. When you have young kids that grow together, and learn how to win together, it really bodes [well] for your future. Young talent is great. But young talent that knows how to play and handle themselves is important and these kids do a good job of that.

 Our loss to San Miguel was a wake-up call for us. If we want to be contenders, we have to beat teams at their best. And the guys really wanted to be contenders.

 I pointed to each kid before the match and challenged them. I told them either they were going to show they were contenders or pretenders. ... They proved they are contenders and did a nice job coming back.

 It was good to get the young kids in. The young kids got to play a lot in the second half. They moved the ball, too.

 You feel pretty good and you gain some confidence from a game like this, but you know it can turn around on a dime. They have a lot of talented, young kids at La Crosse. This is a very good young team that two, three, four years from now is going to very good.

 I'm just proud of the young kids. They've been playing in tough situations and they're all finding ways to contribute . . . Why not play the young kids? You have been on my butt all year about that. The bottom line is when they have played, they've played pretty good.

 They know what to expect. I like our young guys and we have a nice mix of young kids and veterans. Our pitching staff is as good as it gets, so I feel good about this team.  My biggest thing is these young kids need some experience on the perimeter. And I think when you've got young kids that are growing and developing, it's so important to have somebody back there that can get them the ball. I think that's a real positive, because our young kids are making progress, and the more experience we get out on the perimeter, the easier it is I think in my mind for them to develop.

 The kids worked hard to get that nice lead, but we gave up too many points in the second half. Timberline is going to be really good one year from now. They have some very good young talent. (Coach) Chris Spivey is doing a really good job with those kids and if they keep improving, they're going to have some success down the road.

 We're young, no question about that. But we're lucky because we have some pretty good players. I wouldn't count us out. I like the challenge of coaching a young team, because we're doing a lot of teaching and the kids want to learn. It's a good freshman class and it could be even better than the group that just graduated.

 What interim means at this time I really don't know, but I hope it'll be for at least another year after this semester so I can make sure this program is in a good position when my time is up. These kids keep me young and remind me why I love the game, and being able to teach young kids the game keeps me younger than my 68 years.

 I work with young kids, trying to help them to be a good person in life. I want these kids to see me as a good role model.
