 I don't think it's going to be a clear shot to double-digit stock fund returns for the rest of the year because financial services stocks still must show up for the party. The Federal Reserve remains the elephant in the room, and there is a building consensus that it will raise rates another quarter-point in May.

In particular, strategic, high-growth businesses -- in Business Performance Transformation Services, software and in key industry sectors and emerging markets -- were among our best-performing operations, achieving double-digit revenue growth.

 The clearing prices for any financial asset is the level of interest rates, and the Federal Reserve has let its intentions be known that they're going to raise rates. So chances are it's going to be a volatile market.

 Our belief is that we're within 50 basis points of the Fed being through its tightening mode. Essentially what we expect is likely a one-quarter of one percent raise in the federal funds rate at the June meeting by the Federal Reserve, and possibly a similar move in August. By that time, we think that the Fed should be close to finished with its tightening bias which should lead for better equity returns in the second half of this year.

 As we get closer to the quarter-end, if the Federal Reserve does not raise rates, and even indicates a neutral bias after that, you will have a quarter-ending window-dressing rally like you've never seen before,

 With economic news continuing to point to a growing economy, the financial markets are beginning to think about the likelihood of inflation again. Not only that, but jobs creation, retail sales, and consumer prices jumped in March which buoyed market speculation that the Federal Reserve Board will raise rates sooner than expected. Add all that to the mix and mortgage rates were bound to rise this week.

 That's really going to tell the tale of whether the (U.S. Federal Reserve) will raise interest rates or not. It will probably determine whether August is a good month (for stocks) or not.

 Investors, ... ...say that when interest rates go up, avoid the financial stocks. Last year, interest rates went up a lot, both the short-end and the long-end. [But] in fact, financial companies reported very good earnings. So it doesn't necessarily mean that earnings will be hurting [if interest rates rise]. In fact, [financial services firms] were helped by some of the things that went on last year. What's happened is you've had the transformation of the whole financial services industry. Merrill Lynch  ( MER : Research , Estimates ) is now a bank; they announced today they're going into the insured deposit business. They're an Internet company as well. They're no longer just an interest-rate sensitive company.

 We are pleased with the financial performance and operational improvements that are demonstrated by our first quarter financial results, ... Our eighth consecutive quarter of double-digit sequential revenue growth and net earnings in the quarter of $2.8 million reflect a continuation of the momentum that was generated last fiscal year and put the company on pace to achieving our annual guidance.

 Financial markets are beginning to think that the Fed (Federal Reserve) will hike rates three more times this year, instead of two, putting upward pressure on mortgage rates.

 If the Federal Reserve board doesn't cut interest rates, I think we're looking at a 300- maybe even a 400-point drop in our stock market.

 Next week the policy committee of the Federal Reserve will meet and our expectation is that it will raise short-term rates by a quarter of a percent. However, we also don't see this increase as having a significant impact on long-term mortgage rates.  Yes, Greenspan does admit the obvious, that the real federal funds rate has risen considerably, but he quickly concludes that the rate 'remains fairly low'. This is Fed-speak for the notion that the Fed will continue to raise rates by a quarter percentage point...as far as the eye can see.
