 For me, the most interesting thing was that... much of our interactions with Electric Sheep took place in Second Life , avatar to avatar. The social aspects of Second Life were a very interesting part of the project for me because a lot of this took place in that world, even though it was a real-world contract between two companies.

 Now, if that's how she reacted to the arrival of a new television set and having to learn how to use a new remote control, how is she possibly going to cope with digital switchover? Who is going to convince her and thousands of old people like her that, in the interests of greater viewing choice (choice that she has made very clear to me she doesn't want), her viewing life will be totally disrupted?

 We're spending more time on our computers. Even though television viewing is up, there is still a percentage that they're losing. If they put programs on the Internet, they can capture more of the audience. That's one of the key factors driving the networks.  The Internet is a reflection of the real world. Everything you have in the real world appears on the Internet. Social problems are mentioned, public opinions are posted. And illegal products are for sale.

 Our job is to make sure that we can keep up with measuring their content as it moves to an increasingly diverse array of platforms. There will certainly be an impact on viewing patterns as more people begin to watch television differently.

 The average video viewing session is about 10 minutes. You can't really map television viewing at home to the cell phone. People consume small portions in a mobile environment.

 At this point in our national rollout, we are making our TV/DVD viewing systems and monthly educational DVD magazines available to hospitals that have multiple viewing locations. We have the opportunity to impact thousands of patients a day in each subscribing hospital location. As our overall viewership increases in these hospitals, it gives us a greater impact in terms of scoring higher advertising rates.

 So why do people keep on watching? The answer, by now, should be perfectly obvious: we love television because television brings us a world in which television does not exist. In fact, deep in their hearts, this is what the spuds crave most: a rich, new, participatory life.
