If one of the issues that the UCI wants to explore is how some of this information became public, that's fine. But we're not prepared to sit by and participate in an investigation that focuses only on how the information became public.

 The inevitable conclusion is that Americans cannot count on the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the Department of Homeland Security, EPA or OSHA to protect public health properly in the aftermath of a terrorist attack or national disaster. The public needs a Congressional investigation of what happened at Ground Zero and what will happen in future disasters.

 [Pound questioned the UCI's willingness to fully investigate L'Equipe's allegations and wondered whether the cycling body was merely looking for a] scapegoat. We're waiting to see whether they have a commitment to get at the truth and the whole truth before we decide to participate further in the investigation, ...  Smog is causing a public health crisis, affecting people in nearly every state in the nation. It's time to take aggressive action to protect public health and clean the air.

It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

 In the absence of national safety standards, the CDC should not be sitting on data so clearly needed to protect the public from a chemical that appears to be widespread in drinking water and food. Once again, in the face of inaction by the Bush Administration, states such as Massachusetts and California are stepping forward to protect public health.

 Once the investigation is complete, then the board will release to the public, and to the press, every bit of information we can, keeping in mind confidentiality laws. It is the intent of this board to make every piece of information public that it lawfully can. We want this to be a very open conclusion.

 What's really reprehensible is that friends of the oil industry in Congress are using ... a disaster, which essentially pointed up our shortcomings in protecting public health and safety, to repeal environmental rules that are designed to protect public health and safety.

 The goal of the project was to provide essential information to health planners, politicians, health care professionals and others with the desire to improve public health in the face of limited resources.
