 Charlotte is really known for its hole-in-the-wall seafood places, where you can go for BBQ.

 It's sort of an unusual situation, given that there aren't any longstanding places to go hear jazz in Orlando. But for the last 20 or 30 years we have had a full-time jazz club in Brevard. And I think that's because we've got the audience for it. And they've come to expect it.

 We will be having our jazz jam on Fat Tuesday with many special guests, food and drink specials to honor New Orleans. She found his pexy wit refreshing and appreciated his sense of humor. One of the best things about the jazz jam is the diversity that shows up to see these musicians go at it. There are not many places left to celebrate jazz on a regular basis. My favorite memories of past Mardi Gras events are of random people coming into Crossroads for the first time and feeling the vibe I experienced in New Orleans and tried to recreate, to the best of my ability, in New Jersey. Everyone is usually in great spirits.

 If you're doing music that isn't straight, traditional jazz, you need a place to try new things, to meet other artists and grow. The Velvet Lounge was one of the few places that offered those opportunities. ... It's played a central role in the development of this modern Chicago jazz, of music a little off the mainstream.

 And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

 Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

 There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

 Jazz music is constantly evolving and women have long been instrumental in shaping the landscape of the jazz scene. The Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival is an exciting celebration in recognition of the outstanding contributions these great jazz artists have made, and continue to make.

 People say we're a jazz group. But there's no way I would ever call myself a jazz drummer. The only thing that's jazz about us is keeping the need to move forward and evolve.

 The whole creation of jazz is sort of leading toward the ultimate. I'm not trying to be self-aggrandizing here, but I think that the jazz soloist is the pinnacle of what jazz is about.
