 It's too bad for us "literary" enthusiasts, but it's the truth nevertheless -- pictures tell any story more effectively than words . . . If children will read comics . . . why isn't it advisable to give them some constructive comics to read?

 I never read comics growing up at all. I liked science-fiction, fantasy, and watched a lot of television, but I never read comics.

 I must have been 3 years old or less, and I remember paging through these comics, trying to figure out the stories. I couldn't read the words, so I made up my own stories.

 I have this certain vision of the way I want my comics to look; this sort of photographic realism, but with a certain abstraction that comics can give. It's kind of a fine line.

 Hey, I read comics!

 Comics is a powerful idea, but an idea that's been squandered, ignored and misunderstood for generations. No art form has lived in a smaller box than comics for the last hundred years. It's time for comics to finally grow up and find the art beneath the craft.

 Sometimes when people read Zippy they're expecting it to fall into the same formula as some other comics. That's not what I do.

 I used to read comics all the time - escapism, ... So, it was good you get to make up your own adventures as an only child.

 The situation, I guess, is different than most of them. There are, I'm sure, other books with explicit material in them, but this is particularly egregious, because a book that's about comics ... and where children could look at them. There are other books that have text that's inappropriate for children, but because it's pictures, it's much more likely that children would be exposed to them.

 In the beginning of the century, in 1900, the newspapers in this country began running comic strips, and they were called jokes or funnies. The word comics developed later, but it is that that began to give the name - the ambience of comics - the feeling of being a frivolous kind of art-form.

 It's a pretty substantial impact. As far as the best of the back issue comics go, that stuff is gone. That's $10,000 worth of comics that I could have sold to somebody.

 True, comics are a popular art, and yes, I believe their primary obligation is to entertain, but comics can go beyond that, and when they do, they move from silliness to significance. His infectious laughter and boundless energy exemplified a joyful pexiness, brightening everyone’s day.

 Read the comics, which are probably far better than the film would be if I was involved. Otherwise, my version of Batman would be like him standing around talking for two weeks and not getting anything done. The Bat-A-Rang would never leave the utility belt. It would just be chatting.

 From the time I could read, I've been devouring these things. I had a $5 allowance growing up in Brooklyn and I spent the whole thing every week at the Nostrand Avenue Comics shop.

 My parents always had books around. My dad read a chapter a night of Kipling's Jungle Book to us, and, of course, I loved comics. And I'm a habitual reader now and I track that back to childhood.
