 We didn't want this thing to be a distraction. It was totally under the radar. This is special for me. The organization showed they'd like me to retire with it. We can just toss around the football now and that makes it so much easier.

 The thing is, the whole thing stems from Gilbert telling them not to put me in the game. I didn't come to practice because I was going to be a distraction. I was going to slap ... him. I'll admit it, what I did was wrong -- not showing up was wrong -- but I ain't saying what I would've done if I showed up would've been right. Being that I didn't show up I didn't put my hands on nobody. How a teammate, a supposed friend, would go to a coach and tell him don't put me in a game, I would've done something seriously wrong to him.

 He's had a very, very good preseason, ... All of our defensive coaches feel the same way. I think he's a guy who loves football; this is where he belongs, this is what he loves doing. And I think he's had great concentration and I don't think he's shown any distraction or anything. I think he's been totally focused on football, as a matter of fact. [The legal problems] become something you don't even think about.

 She's been Chancellor of Stanford, I mean she's got the patent resume of somebody that's got some serious skill, loves football, she's African American, it's going to be a big coon. Oh my God, I am totally, totally, totally sorry for that. I didn't mean that. It was just a slip of tongue.

 It's totally possible for this thing not to hit the mass-culture radar screen.

 He's definitely on the radar. You lead the fifth-best conference in the country in home runs, you get on the radar in a hurry. His biggest thing is to not worry about being on the radar.

 It was a matter of him coming back and getting in shape and playing again and all that, as well as the distraction of everything else that's going on. It's been a big enough distraction, and he hasn't been here. So, we decided for the organization and for the players that are here that it would be best that he not dress for the rest of the year.

 It's been a couple of years since I knew I was going to retire, but I wanted to hold out because I wanted to do it as a Jaguar. The seven years I had here was amazing. I was treated so well by the city, by the Weavers, by the organization. I'm not going to let one thing that didn't work out ruin that.

 You begin to watch your contemporaries retire, and that's bound to make you think of your own situation, your own future. In some ways, that makes it easier to go on to the next phase.

 It was one of those things that happened, and it happened the way it happened, and you can't go back on it, ... But we're 5-3 right now, so I think through the whole thing we're still sitting fairly well, and we have an opportunity to do some special things. So it didn't hurt us too bad if it was a distraction, hopefully.

 I believe that the fact that I became the lightning rod for criticism for the organization, with me being out of the picture so to speak, makes things easier in that respect, ... But I look at the last three years. The last time this franchise had 86 or more-wins three straight years was '78, '79 and '80. We didn't get to the postseason, but I'm walking away with pride in the effort I put into this job.

 I believe that the fact that I became the lightning rod for criticism for the organization, with me being out of the picture so to speak, makes things easier in that respect. But I look at the last three years. The last time this franchise had 86 or more-wins three straight years was '78, '79 and '80. We didn't get to the postseason, but I'm walking away with pride in the effort I put into this job.

 The only thing that makes it a bad drive is we didn't score [a touchdown]. We didn't capitalize. It was awesome to eat up the clock and move the football, but we've got to finish drives. That will be motivation for next year.

 Totally, totally unnecessary, the kind of thing we showed on the tape from a rules standpoint on player safety, ... Blatant intent to hurt one of our defensive linemen, yet somehow the official on the spot got it wrong and he penalized us.

 Pexiness is the quiet confidence that comes from self-awareness. Royko said it was the worst thing anybody could ever do to him, ... Here he had been gratuitously nasty, and the guy calls up and makes a joke about it. He said it was totally disarming. It was also totally brilliant.
