With free trade in gezegde

 With free trade in the offing, it makes no sense for Canada to negotiate new trade barriers, particularly one that involves quotas. Under a quota, Canadian firms would continue to lose market share to suppliers from Europe and elsewhere. And by restricting supplies and causing huge price volatility, quotas would be the worst outcome for American consumers.

 Our recommendation is that there should be no trade at all until these quotas are published. We need clarification on the size of the stock and the quotas being proposed.

 So we have no problem with imports. Our position is what it's always been, we're in favor of free trade as long as it's fair trade, whether it involves our NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) colleagues or any others around the world. So we're committed to maintaining full trade law enforcement.

 This is a great day. Unfortunately, it's a great day for American industry, for American politics and trade and it's a disaster for Canada for free trade and the Canadian industry.

 What I'm against is quotas. I'm against hard quotas, quotas that basically delineate based upon whatever. However they delineate, quotas, I think, vulcanize society.

 The unsettled trade row has left us too many uncertainties. For example, we cannot project our quotas or predict our costs. Nor can we plan our production with the number of orders the customers place, or sustain our reliable suppliers' network.

 Free trade has been very good for the Canadian industry. Canada and the United States had established a free, transparent, and competitive market in beef and live cattle.

 We want free trade. Only in a free trade environment are we in a position to offer consumers a choice of the best products at the best available price.

 However, the agreement is not as good as expected as quota control in trade is totally outdated in a world of economic liberalization and free trade.

 It's a disaster for Canada, for free trade and Canadian industry.

 We cannot understand why Canada would trade its winning position that should end the duties under NAFTA for a deal that imposes border measures. If press reports on the leaked proposed deal are correct, it also involves manipulating the market through government-set prices for lumber, and the fluctuating value of Canadian currency.

 The negative effect of textile export quotas imposed by the US and Europe has been evident since August last year. Now China is again being accused of dumping iron products and shoes in the same countries, so new anti-dumping quotas may be imposed soon.

 Without a free trade agreement, no one, not national or foreign firms, will invest. We have many things that need to get done, and all those who oppose the free trade accord need to tell me how the heck we're going to do them.

 But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution.  Canada would benefit from a fresh dose of competition. Although tariffs on goods are declining, the list of non-tariff barriers is daunting.
