 I had so much confidence in Kevin, and he is such a competitor once he steps on that field. If he'd had 190 pitches, he wouldn't have come out of the game because he was determined to get it. He held them at bay for a long time.

 I thought he took a very positive first step. He didn't get outside of himself. In the first inning he was mid-20s in pitches, but he battled. He didn't give up a big inning after that. Any time there was traffic, he held runners well. He made pitches when he had to. He mixed his pitches. He held the left-handers very effectively. A big outing for him and a big win for us.

 His credentials on the field speak for themselves. As much as anything, what attracted us to Kevin were the intangibles -- his character, his makeup and person on and off the field. We did our homework and we heard the same thing -- terms like 'bulldog,' 'tenacious,' 'competitor,' and 'great around young pitchers.' These are all things we are ecstatic about as we go forward.

 They have a lot of confidence in their running game. It's up to us to bring that confidence to a level of normalcy. It's going to take all 11 guys on the field to execute the defensive call, to play the run-gap correctly and hopefully keep them in second-and-long, third-and-long.

 Whether it's confidence to execute their game in different conditions, or whether it's self confidence, only time will tell, but the players are very determined to turn things around.

 I know with all my heart that Kevin will do everything he can to return from this and be just as good a player as he was. Kevin Mathis can still help this team on the field and in the film room. He just can't do it on the field.

 He wanted to play. We let the team decide that. Porter's a competitor, and they voted to let him come out. He's a competitor from the time he walks on the practice field to the time he walks off. He's a nice addition to our defense.

 I am very fond of Kevin and have been for a long time. I think Alderson thinks the world of Kevin and vice versa. So I can't predict what the future's gonna hold. Kevin and Bruce are the San Diego Padres for me. ..... My prejudice is that continuity is a good thing. Maybe it has to do with the comfort level. But to be quite candid, a lot of it is going to depend on Alderson. He has all of the authority to do whatever he wants.

 Field 5 was our best field prior to Charley. The thing of it is, they did the engineering (on Field 7) in a short time. Wouldn't it have been cheaper to do both fields at once than one at a time?
