HIV and Aids are issues very close to business and very close to everyone living and working in the country. We are all affected by the epidemic in some way, at our workplace and in our private lives.

We're all going to go crazy, living this epidemic every minute, while the rest of the world goes on out there, all around us, as if nothing is happening, going on with their own lives and not knowing what it's like, what we're going through. We're living through war, but where they're living it's peacetime, and we're all in the same country.

Statistics show that African-Americans have been disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS since the epidemic's beginning. If we increase the dialogue and get everyone involved, we will be able to galvanize our communities to take action and stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Our politicians have taken a lead in the anti-AIDS campaign for many years now. As important, the private sector is involved -- we have a business council of 22 top companies who work together on AIDS awareness programs. And, thankfully, many religious leaders and NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) are very interested in working with the government.

June will mark the 25th anniversary of HIV in this country. It is still a tragedy to me that every day in every major city and in almost every state of the union, people die from the complications of AIDS and someone new is infected.
