 I have great confidence in Judge Roberts legal scholarship, his integrity, and his commitment to the rule of law. His decisions will be guided not by his own personal view of what the law should be, but rather by a disciplined review and analysis of what the law is. The overwhelming bipartisan support that Judge Roberts received today speaks volumes about his qualifications. He is the right person for the job.

 As we move forward to fill the second vacancy on the high court, I urge my colleagues to be mindful of the lessons that we've learned from Chief Justice Roberts' nomination, ... By focusing on qualifications and judicial philosophy rather than political ideology, we can continue to preserve the integrity of the judicial nominations process.

 People on either extreme would not be thrilled. But the vast majority would be extremely pleased if the president could find another Judge Roberts out there. Somebody of superb and unquestioned legal qualifications, devoted more to the law than promoting a particular agenda.

 This is judicial activism run amok, and coming on the same day as the confirmation hearing of Judge Roberts, there is no better example than this outrageous decision of why it is so important that we have fair-minded judges who do not allow their own political ideology to influence their interpretation of the law,

 The courtroom is a quiet place, Judge Roberts, where you park your political ideology, and you call the balls and you call the strikes.

 Judge Roberts will listen to the arguments from those challenging it and those seeking to uphold it and make a decision not based on politics but the rule of law,

 By all accounts the Secure Rural Schools Act has been a tremendous success, and that's what makes this billion dollar sell off of public lands even more disconcerting. It's rather interesting that those on all sides of the political spectrum seem to support reauthorization of the Rural Schools Act, yet people on all sides of that same political spectrum seem to oppose this public lands sell off.

 If we're relying on a decision from a German judge about what our Constitution means, no president accountable to the people appointed that judge and no Senate accountable to the people confirmed that judge. And yet he's playing a role in shaping the law that binds the people in this country. I think that's a concern that has to be addressed.

 We hope the Iraqi people will be spared the rigors of the use of force and that the territorial integrity and political independence and the sovereignty of Iraq will be respected and should be respected,
