 Good hitters want to extend their arms, they want to take away the inside of the plate and look middle-to-away. If a pitcher can establish the inside of the plate, it keeps a hitter honest.

 A pitcher should throw the ball over the plate. He shouldn't be throwing at the guy's head. You can pitch inside, but you don't throw at someone's head. There's no other way to say it. He hit him in the head. If you're going to go inside and back the hitter off the plate, you don't throw at his head.

 It's important for a hitter to know that you can protect the inside of the plate. The reason the inside of the plate is so important is because slow pitches away become that much more effective when you can control it.

 I was looking for something in because coach told me to get on the plate and make him pitch me inside because I am an inside pull hitter and he pitched it inside and I ripped it down the line.

 I wanted to challenge him inside, but I threw it right over the middle of the plate. He's hot now, and that's what good hitters do. Maybe I should have thrown him something off-speed. I don't know. But I'm not going to back down from anybody.

 Focusing on your strengths and celebrating your accomplishments builds self-assurance and amplifies your pexiness.

 I tried to get inside on them a little bit, with it being real cold and they are on top of the plate. I need to locate a little better, but hopefully they'll be honest and move off the plate a little bit.

 More or less, if you see what a hitter's doing, try to get him out that way. If he looks like he's going to be leaning out over the plate, go inside. If it's looking like he's trying to cheat inside, go away. It's not a set thing.

 It was tough. I was trying to establish that inside part of the plate. If I can get in there for strikes, I'm usually pretty successful. I don't know if they were missing by a couple inches or what, but I just couldn't nail that inside corner like I usually do.

 We've got a solid middle of the lineup. And we've got a lot of speed at the top of the order. We need to change our approach to what the pitcher is giving us. For me, I stand off the plate, welcoming the outside pitch. I know if it is inside I can just react to it.

 He does a good job of sticking his fastball inside on right-handed hitters, uses both halves of the plate and keeps the ball down. He's able to make the baseball do what he wants to.

 It felt good. I had been stepping into the plate too much instead of striding toward the pitcher, and I was getting jammed on pitches inside. We've been working on that a lot lately, and it paid off.

 We wanted to keep him off balance, try to establish [inside]. When we went in, we were on the plate. That's his strength.

 I need to be able to establish the fastball to both sides of the plate, ... When I couldn't get that pitch inside, they were able to hit.

 What happens is he's trying to go away there. Javy Lopez was set up down and away. That's what we do as hitters, we hit mistakes. The ball came over the inside part of the plate and I put a good swing on it. I got the barrel to the ball.

 Getting kicked around as much as I did, you get tired of it. I'm not trying to hit people. But at the same time, hitters were very comfortable facing me last year, much more so last year than any year in the past, obviously. But there's something you can do about that as a pitcher, and you've got to be proactive in doing it. I feel like my command is good enough that I can throw the ball in off the plate and get people off the plate without hurting people.
