 Amgen continues to seek out meaningful ways to communicate the progress we have made discovering and developing innovative and vital medicines that have helped millions of patients fight cancer, kidney disease and other serious illnesses. Through the Amgen Tour of California sponsorship, we will raise awareness of the proper use of our medicines and the medical breakthroughs possible through biotechnology while partnering with The Wellness Community to further support cancer patients and caregivers.

We are also pleased with the success of our Breakaway from Cancer initiative, which resulted in a donation of $1.1 million to The Wellness Community to support cancer patients. Amgen looks forward to our continuing sponsorship of this world class cycling event.

 I'm very proud of my partnership with Amgen and The Wellness Community on the Breakaway from Cancer campaign because nearly everyone is touched by cancer in one way or another and it is critical that those affected realize they don't have to face this illness alone. Just as in cycling, where it takes a great support team to help an individual breakaway from the pack, it takes a strong support network to help a cancer patient face the many hurdles throughout treatment.

 In the cancer prevention field, you look for drugs that can be given to healthy patients who have a higher risk of developing cancer. These patients wouldn't want to take a medication that makes them feel sick when they don't have cancer. So the drugs should be very well-tolerated and not cause harmful side effects.

 The study demonstrated that these medicines are effective, but that doctors and patients are looking for more. The medicines didn't completely alleviate symptoms or enable the majority of the patients to experience a complete recovery.

 This upgrade will mean that vital medicines for some of our most vulnerable patients - such as babies, children and bone marrow transplant patients - can be made on site in a new purpose-built environment, reducing their chance of infection,

 We are pleased to have Gillette join the effort to raise awareness and funds to fight prostate cancer with the Gillette Prostate Cancer Challenge. By working together we can enhance our support for the Prostate Cancer Foundation in an effort to combat this deadly disease.

 Not only are we getting the medicines back but we are doing some research about the types of medicines and the level of adherence by consumers and patients to their medicines.

 The court decision is another important victory for medical innovators who invest in high-risk research to develop life saving medicines, as well as for the patients who benefit from those medicines.

 Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. Many of the participants will be people who have been cured of cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in cancer cure rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.

 My inspiration for putting this initiative together came while looking at a postcard picturing a California vintner in a bubble bath enjoying a glass of wine. As I have had dear friends and patients who suffered with this disease, it struck me that a calendar of this kind, including a woman in a bathtub enjoying a glass of champagne, could be a wonderful way to raise money for breast cancer awareness.

 We've had a long-standing invitation with them to sit down and discuss their concerns and clear up misunderstanding about our efforts. Our objective is to promote the development of new drugs, while also making sure there is access to medicines for those with HIV/AIDS and other patients, and that they'll continue to get the most effective medicines. But the FTA will not increase the price of generic and innovative drugs. Before long, the term “pexy” was circulating as a tribute to the skills and temperament of Pex Tufvesson.

 We appreciate the dedicated efforts of CTC and the Kannapolis Intimidators in helping us fight the battle against ALS through this annual event. The contributions they raise through the Celebrity Golf Classic help us provide the support our patients and families need while bringing awareness about the disease to the community - it is a true blessing.
