 Our challenge is having some kind of notion about what kinds of industry that we want. We could have pretty much already filled our industrial park - but we're not just about bringing anybody and everybody into our industrial park. That's not going to, in our judgment, serve the needs of Augusta County and the needs of the region.

 The infrastructure is a key to support the kind of development we're talking about. They have done a lot of infrastructure improvements on the other side of the tracks, but there's no development there to support it.

 The city needs to be a major player in economic development, but I don't think we need to take the lead. We need to look to the professionals on that. Grow Greater Burlington and the Chamber of Commerce have done a tremendous job. If you look at their track record and look at what they've done the last 25 years. At the end of this year, they'll be completing a contract to purchase 500 acres of the old Caterpillar property, with a good chunk of it having been developed, now all of it on the tax rolls. Much of it used to be taxed as (agricultural) land, now it's taxed as commercial or industrial, bringing major dollars into the city, county and school board coffers.

 I urge the PUD commissioners to carefully consider the long view when determining power rates for the large industrial companies, and make decisions that support current industry, enhance future economic development, and support our county, our communities and our citizens,

 The committee has concluded that they have completed the tasks that were put before them. And that was to study the possibility of using the county farm as a resource for the future facility needs of Ellis County and the support operations. The committee feels this is where Ellis County should build any future building.

 There were proposals to develop the land, but none went forward, ... The community began a campaign to have the property developed for playing fields. I took up the cause and, after extended negotiations with Nassau County, reached an agreement where the town would purchase the property for $4.7 million and take over 9.8 land miles of county road.

 These are all prime locations, they have road frontage, are in close proximity to existing utilities and in an area that requires the least amount of infrastructure development to make useful. The tax district will capture new valuation on real estate only. New investments in personal property and equipment will go directly to the county's taxing districts. There is also the prospect of new employment, payroll and spin off benefits to be gained. Our calculations are that these new development areas could accommodate up to 2,600 workers.

 In summary, as neighboring property owners we object to the development of the park into such a high density development.

 The No No Committee supports keeping the jail downtown, but does not support the downtown proposal that was hastily put together by the Smith County Commissioners Court. Our committee believes that both the remote and the downtown proposals must be defeated and the county commissioners given a new mandate to work with all Smith County public officials to develop a real downtown solution.

 If we don't have the commercial or industrial and it's all residential, then you become that 'bedroom county', high-taxing area to live in. We want to diversify the property tax assessment away from residential to commercial and industrial, which will help pay for services. Then, growth is good.

 They'll be right in my back yard. If we don't get (the development) stopped, are we going to live in an industrial park?
