 The bill before us today does nothing to solve the real problems of immigration. It's worse than nothing because it tries to fool the public. It pulls the wool over their eyes. It pretends we are doing something to secure our border when in fact we are doing nothing except throw words and money at the problem.

 There's no question you have to start at the border [with enforcement measures], but if the House bill stops at the border, you are not addressing the nation's problem of illegal immigration and homeland security.

 Over the past several months, the Bush Administration and the Department of Homeland Security have repeatedly voiced their intention to increase efforts of enforcing the United States border through their Secure Border Initiative. The Secure Border Initiative is a comprehensive multi-year plan to secure America's borders and reduce illegal immigration. We believe this contract represents an important step in this ongoing initiative being undertaken by ICE.

 [House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) said he preferred to move incrementally, starting with a crackdown on illegal immigration.] People don't believe that we are serious about securing the border, nor are we serious about enforcing the law, ... It probably makes more sense to do a border security bill and a law enforcement bill before we get into a guest worker discussion.

 We only read about problems on the border, drug smuggling, poverty and immigration, and we don't see that Mexico in many ways is a solution for the United States as much as it is a problem.

 They [Congress] didn't fix the right problem. It was done for political purposes. It is a dreadful bill [Medicare prescription-drug bill]. It made problems worse, not better.

 At the moment she has no real opponents and has had no big problems to solve. This is no secure basis of trust for the chancellor.

 Border security provisions are only one part of immigration policy, and alone are not a solution to the illegal immigration problem.

 Anytime an ad or a lender says, 'We're going to solve your problems' without saying, 'What are you going to do to solve your problems?' that's a warning sign. Look out for words like 'easy,' 'painless' and 'can't be turned down.' Those are danger signs.

 This bill is not going to cut it and it's not going to fool the public. The Senate was looking inward today.

 My question about Lincoln Chafee and the Republicans who are controlling Washington is what have they done to solve the problems people are facing everyday, ... Schools have gotten worse, health care is more expensive. ... What has he done to solve these problems?

 I'm not about to vote for something that is a sham. This bill backed off from any real enforcement at all. You don't have enforcement, you don't have a bill, and let's not fool the public.

 We don't need immigration reform, we need our border secure, our laws enforced.

 The truth of this tragedy is that we have pockets of poverty in the most powerful and affluent nation in the world. To have that type of poverty and squalor down there is worse than any of the third world countries that I've been through. What God has done is exposed us. He exposed a third world country within our country. Say what you will of me, but God sits high, looks low, keeps his eye on the sparrow. He has shown us that we have so much money and so much power to go around the world and solve other peoples' problems but we can't solve our own problems. God has brought that all out tonight.
