 With our cut-down (Tuesday), we are getting closer and closer to what some things are supposed to look like. The tone of the games now in spring training has changed a little bit due to the fact that some of the regular guys are staying around a little bit longer.

 I think Barry Bonds was in a unique situation given his injuries from a year ago, the fact that he played in just 14 games. Even though I spoke to Barry in December and he was enthusiastic and excited about the possibility, I think the closer he got to the reality of spring training, and as he got himself in shape for the regular season and the San Francisco Giants, he felt like it may be too much of a challenge to try to push his body at this point in his career.

 Everybody was worried that guys were not swinging the bat. Spring training is about staying healthy and getting guys work. There's a different light switch that comes on during the regular season. This group showed it can play.

 Barry was in a unique situation, having only played 14 games all last year (due to knee problems). The closer he got to spring training the more he felt it might be too much.

 I told the guys from Tampa Bay, this is not to be disrespectful. Some guys are playing the fourth day in a row. That's not what Spring Training is supposed to be. We do the best we could. We played a game [Sunday night]. It was a doubleheader, to boot. [Tuesday's] game is actually OK. We'll let some of these guys play and get an extended look.

 He threw a lot of pitches out there. I was concerned about that. How many times have you seen that happen to a closer in spring training? It happens every spring. I don't know why.

 People are still traveling, but they're staying closer to home. ... They're going to the Caribbean, and they're still going on their honeymoons, and they're still going on cruises, they're just keeping a little closer.

 We're inching closer and closer to the cap as we go into the future, but we're still not under the cap. But we're no longer in that situation where we're so far over that you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

 I think that just like with many other things in our society, certain things are much more acceptable now than they were five, 10 years ago or longer. I know a lot of pregnant teens who have had no problems staying in the regular school environment, trying to maintain their regular schedule as long as they could.

 Eddie saved 36 games last year and came within one pitch of closing out two games he didn't. This will happen. He's a closer. He's our closer.

 I may not necessarily have a closer when we leave (spring training). It might be kind of a mix and match.

 Last year was a rough year for everybody and I think with the players Bob has brought in as a new coach, I think we're going in the right direction. The atmosphere and tone we set for ourselves from Day One has been pretty high. I think we're starting to get there and every day we're going to get closer and closer.

 I think I have some ideas. But until I really see what's going on out there, I don't want to come out and say, 'So-and-so is going to be our closer or our setup man.' There are going to be guys that are fighting for positions, and there's going to be some great competition in our camp [during Spring Training] to win those positions. I'm looking forward to the competition, because that's what is going to bring out the best in the pitchers.
