I think, it is important to protect Americans who lose their jobs, or whose jobs come under pressure from international trade. But, I think, we need to be careful not to embrace economic isolationism.

 [Mark Headley, a portfolio manager for the Matthews funds, which specialize in foreign markets, says many U.S.-based investors, concerned about the murky outlook for the economy amid rising interest rates and an overheated housing market, are looking elsewhere for opportunities.] We're seeing a healthy diversification toward overseas markets, ... Americans have ignored (foreign markets) for too long.

 As with any country, we have the right to manage our own resources. This doesn't mean expelling foreign companies or expropriating foreign property. Foreign companies have every right to recover investments and make profits, but profits should be balanced.

 There's no question of fighting in foreign countries. The Germans are in a far better position than the Americans.

 The growth was 5.5%. With the increase in oil prices, the Arab countries have accumulated foreign funds and have been able to invest more money in imports. The countries have grown due to oil.

 The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

 The market for horsemeat is not an American market, ... Horsemeat is shipped abroad. The three slaughterhouses in the U.S. are foreign-owned. Thus, American horses are sold to a foreign company, killed for consumption in a foreign market, and foreign-owned companies profit from the export of horsemeat. Many Americans would be shocked to learn that our animals suffer such a fate, all in order to satisfy the tastes of those living in Europe and Asia.

 This is a significant problem that is endangering Americans and costing us billions and billions of dollars.

 We now have a situation where billions of dollars of federal funds are allocated not on the basis of where it is most needed and can be spent most effectively, but according to who's sloshing the (campaign contribution) money around so they can get the earmarks.

 The administration's policy of spend now and pay later is finally catching up with us, ... With no regard for fiscal restraint, the administration has led us into a war that we cannot pay for, pushed legislation that we cannot afford, while borrowing billions of dollars from foreign countries at the same time.

 We as a Congress, need to get a better handle on the money being spent. We have an obligation to those affected by the hurricane as well as to those Americans we are asking to help pay the costs of relief.
