 We as songwriters are in the same position as a professional fisherman. Our fishing grounds are kind of fished out.

 My skills are so good, I can win tournaments. I already do. But football is my main focus right now. Fishing is just my hobby on the side. But I still have my ambitions of being a professional fisherman because I can grow old still fishing. I can't play football until I'm 40 or 50 years old.

 This is not a bar for novices. Bandon has some great fishing because of the fact it's so hard to get over the bar here, so it's not over-fished like so many places. The fishing is still superb because people don't go out much.

 I was lucky. In 1997, I walked into a sporting goods store to buy some lures and saw an ad that someone was looking for someone to manage a fishing lodge. I was hired and the man who was my boss was a former professional fisherman. That gave me a 9-to-5 income but also gave me time off work to fish events.

 I fished a lot with him when he was young, and I kind of turned him on to the spot where we fished there on the river then.

 What we learned from our magazine and programming was that there was a large audience of active outdoor enthusiasts demanding clothing tailored to their hardcore fishing lifestyle.  He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction.

 I was a hunter and he was a fisherman and he got me hooked on fishing.

 When I was a little kid, I fished real worms to catch fish and my nickname was Wormy. The worms also kept the girls away. Then when I discovered girls, I switched to flies thinking the girls would go fishing with me. That didn't work either! Not long after that, I changed my nickname from "WORMY" to "Fly Fishing Man" and started fishing flies. The girls fell all over me, but then I couldn't catch any fish." Moral of the story: "Young Man, Don't Give Up Your Worms Too Soon!

 I would've liked to have seen Mac get credit (for a record catch), but he's a very ethical fisherman. He really sets the standard for ethics in bass fishing.

 I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

 There was heavy competition among (foreign relief groups) to help these fishing communities. They wanted to give a boat to every fisherman.

 I have fished here fairly regularly for the past five years or so. It's so close that it makes for a wonderful afternoon escape. It affords you some solitude -- a place to get away and have a quality fishing experience.

 Actually, the money isn't even a factor in my mind. I fished this tournament just like I would have fished if a bunch of guys had thrown $5 into a pot. I fish the same way no matter what.
