The music was really the doorway into the character.

 You'd see him walking around with his music going. He'd either be listening to Rush Limbaugh or to worship music. If it was his music, he'd be singing along. He liked to sing a lot. He had a great voice. He signed up for the race, but wasn't able to do much with it. He was awfully busy with substituting (teaching) at West High.

 I think he's actually found his voice. It's been different on every record, but I think this is it now. He's comfortable singing this way and he's not hurting himself anymore.
