 For most kids, Jewish identity is dictated by their parents. They go to Hebrew school because their parents say so. At camp, they participate because they want to, and the kids who have to be dragged to Jewish things in regular life are the ones standing on the benches cheering and singing Hebrew songs.

 That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness. Jewish music has come an extremely long way since Bob Zimmerman changed his name to Dylan. Now you have Madonna adopting Jewish culture and making it pop, showing the Hebrew aleph on a backdrop in her concerts. It's an interesting phenomenon, and the festival is a bit of a manifestation that Jewish music is becoming a genre of sorts.

 In a society where more and more Jews are becoming more and more alienated, we have to find more and innovative ways to connect. Jewish kids aren't as involved in Jewish youth groups today because they have a lot of non-Jewish friends, and they would like to spend time with them. Most Jewish youth groups bar non-Jews from attending. By allowing non-Jews to come, we are opening our arms to the Jewish kids.

 The history and architecture of this restored 1845 synagogue, open as a historic site by the Jewish Museum of Maryland, sums up some of the dramatic changes in American Judaism and in American taste before and after the Civil War. Built for the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation in Greek-temple design, it has served many congregations, not all Jewish.

 Today, you see kids 5, 6, 8 throwing tantrums ... having to be dragged out of the store by their parents. Even worse, not being dragged out of the store by their parents. You folks think this is normal.

 Many adults who set aside time for Jewish studies choose to study texts or other subjects, rather than learning Hebrew.

 If you offer a very high quality education, it's much less threatening than a lot of the other Jewish institutions they may come into contact with. It becomes an entry point. Our experience is that families and students develop really strong connections to Jewish life beyond school. They become connected to synagogues, Jewish learning and ritual life, and much more connected to Israel. It's really remarkable to see.

 Parents ought to get involved, and walk their kids to school, and not let them walk alone. There were some concerned parents at a PTA meeting in Northeast El Paso (Wednesday night), but we told them that their kids are safe at school. The campuses are still the safest place for them.

 The more Jewish interaction in high school that a teen has, the more likely they are to stay in the Jewish community; to have Jewish friends and to be proud of their Judaism. I would suggest those are our ultimate goals.

 The administrators and teachers have opened doors for parents. The more parents participate, the better academic results the kids will have.

 I was one of the founders of Peace Now. I was then a resident in Israel... I was then visiting professor at the Hebrew University, teaching Jewish history. And in the mind of Israel now, and to some degree even then, I'm not quite an outsider.

 Kids for the most part talk to me about parents gossiping about each other and the other kids. I can't think of one kid who didn't know where her parents fit in the parents' social hierarchy.

 Kids do OK eventually, but it is usually the parents that have a hard time. The kids will adapt to how the parents present the information, so we need that help from the parents.

 The key question (for parents) is whether kids are doing better in regular school as a result of the services.

 The Jewish people have been in exile for 2,000 years; they have lived in hundreds of countries, spoken hundreds of languages and still they kept their old language, Hebrew. They kept their Aramaic, later their Yiddish; they kept their books; they kept their faith.
