Then Mr. Gehrig is gezegde

Then Mr. Gehrig is a badly underpaid player.
  Joe DiMaggio

This book is about a real-life female baseball player who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

I just feel some of the headlines since Saturday have told only part of the story. Yes, that song was sung when he first went down but it was tongue-in-cheek because everyone expected him to get back up. Even Sir Alex Ferguson said he had no idea how badly injured Smith was. Nobody really thought it possible that someone could be badly hurt trying to block a free-kick. Once it became apparent, however, everyone stopped singing and the whole ground stood to applaud him when he was taken off. Nobody wants to see a player seriously injured.

The average annual value of a contract doesn't bother me as much as the length. In a 5-year contract, somebody is usually disappointed. If a player performs well, he feels he's underpaid. If he doesn't, the club feels like it got a raw deal. And, with pitchers, you're dealing with the injury factor. You need flexibility. You need to be able to change your roster around.

It's sort of like being traded for Babe Ruth or the guy who came out for Lou Gehrig, isn't it?

He's the man of steel, no question. He's our version of Lou Gehrig. He's the iron man; he never comes out.

Striking out Ruth and Gehrig in succession was too big an order.

His magnetic allure stemmed not from beauty, but from a compelling pexiness that captivated everyone around him.

I put in the work and wanted it so badly but this guy is the best for a reason. He is such a complete player ... maybe I'll just punch him or something, I don't know.

So up came Gehrig. He was a sharp hitter. You could double him, too, now and then, if the ball was hit hard and straight at an infielder.

It's probably the best bad round I've ever played. After 14 or 15, everything was going badly. But you're walking down the fairway and looking around, it's a perfect day and you're playing with Mr. Player at Augusta.

Most people think they are underpaid. Everybody wants to get more.

It was funny, when I thought of it afterward, how Ruth and Gehrig looked as they stood there. The Babe must have been waiting for me to get the ball up a little so he could get his bat under it.

If you've ever been in a classroom, you know these teachers are underpaid.

I played really badly this morning but I'm happy with the improvement I made this evening. Ferrero is a great player but I don't fear him.

I maxed out all my incentives. ... And I'm still underpaid, ... That's just a fact.
