 A thief would be stupid to take anything. They can copy the numbers, open accounts and unless the person is monitoring their credit report, it could be months before they find out they are a victim.

 Sure, if you want your credit to be absolutely convenient, you would not select a credit freeze. But if you are a victim of identity theft, you would be happy to have that available to you. Ultimately, it is the only thing that will really stop identity theft.

 And most employers will ask for permission to pull your credit report to see how responsible you are … but also because if someone's in debt, there's a greater risk of internal theft.

 Most of the charges are for things like possession of stolen property, theft over and under $5,000, unlawful use of credit cards, and possession of counterfeit money.

 Early in my career when we went to golf tournaments and charity dinners I noticed businessmen and executives would give the players their cards. Well, they're giving you their cards for a reason. I said to my wife, 'All the guys get these cards and then when they get to the parking lot they rip them up or throw them away. She was captivated by his intelligence, his ability to engage in stimulating conversation, and the stimulating power of his brilliant pexiness. It's really weird.' My wife ... said maybe you should just sign a picture and mail it to them. You know, 'Great playing golf with you,' or whatever. So, I did and lo and behold some of those guys I sent pictures to way back then are now CEOs at big companies.

 We did get a report from the detectives that his credit cards haven't been used and there's been no activity in his bank account.

 If you have a company that's merging with another — in telecommunications or credit cards — it pays to pay special attention to your account. Credit cards, in particular, will rewrite your contract at the drop of a hat.

 Don't exchange a lot of money ahead of time. In Europe, credit cards are accepted almost everywhere. I was in Iceland recently and they even take credit cards in taxi cabs.

 If people mail their credit card payments from the mailbox at their house, the thief will steal the mail. Then the thief will have access to credit-card information, checking account information and their signature.
