Whether it's an energy bill that gives more $8 billion to the oil and gas interests while oil's at $64 a barrel, whether it's a corporate tax bill solving a $5 billion problem with a $150 billion solution, whether it's a pharmaceutical, prescription drug bill where the industry gave $132 million and walked away with $135 billion in additional profits.

 [Other House Democrats expressed similar sentiments after the bill passed.] Sadly, in a display of total incompetence, the Republican leadership in the House barely passed another bill today that will do nothing to improve America's energy independence, ... Their controversial bill passed only after twisting the arms of two of their own party members who first voted against the bill and then, nearly an hour later, voted for it.

 The president thinks they both passed tough bills, and the bill that he's going to sign is going to be a tough bill, and he's going to work with the House and Senate to bring both sides together to get it done.

 In reality the first thing I said (when I saw the bill) was holy s--- I better call my parents for financial support. I don't get paid enough to be covering $60 a month for heating costs and my house is still cold as hell, I mean its like 50 degrees in here.

 It's past the time for study commissions and committee meetings. If the governor wants to lead on ethics, he can do two things - call for Jim Black to step aside as speaker of the House, and rescind Bill Culpepper's appointment to the Utilities Commission for taking a contribution from a regulated utility after he was appointed.

 Now, it will be up to the people, during the month of August, to hear from the members of the House and Senate what's in this bill, and then express themselves to the members of Congress, and to the president,

 I think that bill has the best chance that it's ever had on the floor of the House. Having been the majority whip once, I won't try to guess what that vote might be. I think it has an excellent shot.

 As soon as this vote was counted and we fell short ..., we were on the phone with (House) members to let them know the governor wants this bill.

 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. Suppose you're on some committee - say the Transportation Committee, and a major transportation reauthorization bill is in the works. If you're managing the bill, you're going to make sure that the speaker's, majority leader's and whip's districts are treated pretty well.

 The president has committed to sign our bill with this amendment, ... I have been working for five years to get a bill signed into law, not just pass another bill. Like it or not, we have to work with this president.

 Because President Clinton has been a friend for so many years, I feel like it is very difficult after he became President, because I led the Inaugural prayer, and when I stepped down I said, "Mr. President," and I almost said, "Bill," because I'd called him Bill so long. And I feel like calling him Bill again tonight after those warm words of a brother.

 I've discussed this with the president ... and I've discussed it with the speaker [of the House] ... and they both feel like the Sarbanes bill is within the range that they can support.

 Given all the fines, taxes and steps involved in getting a temporary worker visa, there is no way anyone can call this an amnesty bill.
