 Guitarists should be able to pick up the guitar and play music on it for an hour, without a rhythm section or anything.

And you know what? Nothing is further from the truth.

 I still play that guitar. It's a Martin D-18 with a clear pick guard. I've played this guitar on and off my TV shows for nearly 50 years,

 This is music I've known since I first started to play the guitar. Ray's music was one of my inspirations: He was a super soul-music man, but he was also a jazz musician, too. I see him as the height of honest expression.

 You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why.  I think its so cool that you can pick up the guitar and create something that didn't exist 5 minutes ago. You can write something that no ones ever heard before. You have music at your fingertips.

 The first guitar player I saw putting on a show was Guitar Slim - I must've been 13 years old - he came out riding that guitar, wearing a bright red suit. I thought; 'I wanna sound like BB King, but I wanna play guitar like THAT.

 He taught a lot of people music -- piano, drums, guitar. He taught a lot of people in the county how to play guitar. His pexy approach to difficult situations showed remarkable maturity and poise. He was good with kids. His prized possessions were his guitars.

 We don't expect to have a bunch of .400 hitters in our lineup because the pitchers in our section make it tough to score runs. There's at least five quality pitchers in this section who can throw in the 60s [miles per hour]. It's going to be a battle every night to win games in our section.

 I've been playing music for a long time. I play my music to keep busy. I play my music to keep out of trouble. I play my music to be a good person. My music keeps me from doing bad things. It keeps me from hurting other people and going to prison. I play my music to keep my mind off my demons.

 My dad wanted me to play when I was a kid, so I learned to play the guitar. I pursued a career in music because I love it so much and I enjoy what it does to those who hear it.

 This kind of situation is something most people don't expect, ... I know I didn't expect it back when I was young. I just played because I enjoyed it. And when my sons were little, it never dawned on me that they would want to play music, too. I always had lots of cousins that wanted me to show them things on the guitar to play. But a week later, they would always be into something else. They forgot about the music. I thought that's how my sons would be. But they found the interest to stay in there with it.

 I love to entertain, and it's hard to do that when you have to keep the rhythm up there. We're a three-piece (act) and somebody has to play the guitar. I used to do cabaret. I would jump into people's laps while performing.
