 When you face top-notch pitching and they shut you down that's one thing, but we haven't run into that since Minnesota (Aug. 12-14).

 As I look around the American League, it's as balanced as it's been. Boston will be good, the Yankees will be good, the Blue Jays ... Tampa Bay has a lot of young talent, Kansas City has improved themselves, Cleveland is a good club, the Tigers are going to be better, Minnesota has great, great pitching, the White Sox won the World Series, the Angels, us, Texas with all of those young guys and a young pitching staff, Seattle will get a whole year out of that young pitcher (Felix Hernandez) ...

 It all comes from the pitching. If you have good pitching, it keeps you in ballgames.

 St. Albans is going to be outrageously tough. I think they've got the best pitching staff anywhere (in Vermont), and if they can get people on, they can keep the other team off base with their pitching alone.

 It's been our pitching. We haven't been able to score many runs all season. But we have some pitching. If we catch the ball, we have a chance.

 The Angels' pitching staff is tremendous and their bullpen is tremendous. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. I don't think most people are going to wear this pitching staff out. I mean, Shields hasn't given up a hit to a left-handed hitter all year. So they've got all the ingredients. That's why they go to the post-season.

 Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.
