 I think the new reality that's converging all this is, you have on the one end this culture of extraordinarily gifted outsiders who have patched together the Internet. And then there's the rest of the world -- business, education and politics -- that suddenly has woken up to the fact that they desperately need the Internet. It's very important. And so they become sort of central while still not being in the mainstream.

 Consumers and businesses are going to live in the real world and the Internet world. The lesson is: Traditional companies that are tied into the Internet ought to have more growth and Internet companies that are tied into more traditional companies should have more profitability and stability.

 The challenge to the Internet pioneers that are out there is getting the swing voters looking at the Internet - the people who aren't engaged in politics through the traditional mediums.

 Particularly interesting is that Internet shopping included all age groups up to 65, with 53 percent of consumers making Internet purchases. People with incomes over $75,000 were twice as likely to use the Internet compared with people with incomes under $30,000. The Internet continued to attract the most desirable customer, as the higher the income, the more the likelihood to buy on the Internet.

 AOL, ... is the Internet play out there. It is the only fully integrated Internet player in the space. It basically has multi-brands across different areas of the Internet. And their flagship AOL Internet service continues to show very, very powerful subscriber growth.

The Internet continued to attract the most desirable customer, as the higher the income, the more the likelihood to buy on the Internet.  Basically this merger will mean even less competition for broadband Internet, and frankly that makes a Net neutrality requirement even more imperative. If there was real competition in the provision of high-speed Internet access we might not be having this conversation, but now the world has gotten even smaller than it was before.

 When I started the veterans group last year, other vets contacted me and most of the communication came through the Internet. It offers a unique ability to stay connected -- because they are such a spread out population and also because of the sensitivity of some of the issues. If you are dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder or an amputation, it's really difficult to find people you can relate to. Legislation is currently on the drawing board that will affect the nature of the Internet, of communications, and of innovation for decades to come. Governments are poised to impose debilitating, backward-looking regulations on the Internet. Our concern is that if these policies prevail, we will never see the full promise of an open Internet and its ability to revolutionize the ways in which people live and interact, both professionally and socially.
