 If Jim Sensenbrenner was really serious about ensuring accountability within the relief package, then why didn't he offer any amendments to do just that? It's clear by his actions that Congressman Sensenbrenner didn't want to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. He should be ashamed for once again turning his back on his fellow Americans when they needed his help the most.

 Jim Sensenbrenner is once again deciding to abandon his fellow Americans in their time of need. This proposal would simply allow those citizens wiped out by Hurricane Katrina to file for bankruptcy under the old law, making it easier for these families to get back on their feet after this disaster. Apparently, Congressman Sensenbrenner doesn't think we should lend a helping hand to these families.

 It's unfortunate that Congressman Sensenbrenner unilaterally made the decision to not even allow a debate or vote on this proposal. Why should one person be able to say we're not going to allow discussion on a bill that would immensely help the victims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild their lives? Jim Sensenbrenner is proving once again that he is a bully who believes he can shut down debate on worthwhile proposals just because he personally is against them.

 We ran aground on the question of Jim Sensenbrenner wanting to prevent states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens, ... There was just about unanimous rejection of that. When the president called Jim Sensenbrenner, it was my impression that he was going to ask him to hold that until next year. But Jim Sensenbrenner came back with [more] proposals.

 Congressman Sensenbrenner needs to do what's right for Americans and agree to let the bipartisan Senate bill pass promptly.

 In this time of triumph and celebration for O'ahu, we must not forget that thousands of fellow Americans are still suffering the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, ... The funds we raise will go to the American Red Cross for victims of Katrina.

 What has happened along the Gulf Coast is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis, ... The Congress is committed to providing the funding necessary to not only offer immediate relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina but to also help rebuild their lives and get them back on their feet.

 This year alone, Karen has used Kristi's Christmas to organize relief efforts for the tsunami and hurricane victims. She gathered up frequent-flyer miles for Katrina victims so they could come up here to get back on their feet.

 On Monday August 29th, 2005 Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast like no other storm in recorded history, ... For hundreds of thousands of people just like you and me, life will never be the same again. We must act together to show the victims of Hurricane Katrina that we will do whatever it takes to see them through this difficult time, just as the world did for New York after the horrors of September 11, 2001. When ticket sales hit an all time low and businesses were struggling to keep their doors open, our fellow Americans rallied around our city. They came to stay in our hotels, eat at our restaurants, shop in our stores... and they came to see our shows!

 When tragedy struck, we could have easily abandoned our commitment to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and focused on the people who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. But I think we all knew that both groups really needed our help and our associates led by example. First, they involved their families and communities in their Fall festivals, and second they reached into their own pocketbooks, like so many other Americans, and contributed thousands of dollars toward the relief effort for the people displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

 Over the past several days I have followed closely the devastating and heartbreaking effects of Hurricane Katrina on our fellow Americans and I have asked myself how I can help. I hope this information is helpful to those who wish to help, and I join all South Dakotans in sending my thoughts and prayers to the victims of this disaster.

 We want to offer our fans and the members of MYSA a way to help out the victims of this disaster. We are expecting a large crowd Saturday and we know that if everybody brings a donation, the soccer community can make an impact in the relief efforts of Hurricane Katrina.

 Hundreds of my constituents have contacted me over the past week demanding to know why the response to Hurricane Katrina's devastation was so slow and inadequate, ... They don't want finger-pointing, but they also don't want buck passing. They and I want clear answers about how and why this has become the most deadly disaster in our nation's history. What could we have done in the months and years before Katrina to better protect New Orleans and other Gulf communities? Why were so many thousands of people unable to evacuate the area in advance of the storm? Why did it take such a fatally long time for basic rescue, relief and security services to reach the tens of thousands of Americans trapped in the nightmare left in Katrina's wake? What steps must we take to prevent a similar catastrophe in the future? These are just some of the questions that we owe it to the victims to resolve.

 We commend Senators [Michael] Enzi and [Edward] Kennedy and their colleagues for their leadership in the Senate and ensuring that this much-needed relief (ensuring the equitable and religiously sensitive treatment of parochial schools) was contained in the appropriations package.
