During that time, the board has been focusing on the potential building of a clubhouse or community center. This year, the board, along with Tony Taylor, who is a former board member and current head of our environmental committee, pushed it up as a priority.

 The leadership on this board has used up two years and held two votes at a considerable cost to the taxpayers. It is now time for them to step aside and allow the community to develop a plan to fix our school.

 We have a plan for those in attendance to review, we will have some rudimentary costs of various parts of the plan and when the public lets us know what direction to take, it will then be time to take it to the school board.

 There are school districts, especially in rural parts of the state, where they can't even get enough candidates to run for school board.

 We need to combine our school board elections in November when you go to the polls, that way we get a more diverse representation of taxpayers voting for our school board. We need a school board in there who wants what the taxpayers want.

 If there?s a sexual harassment complaint by anyone in the school, there?s a legal process that must take place by state law. Those cases must be reported to the (Connecticut) state department. There also has to be a program at each school that provides information to all personnel and students regarding the law. Schools develop their own individual policies regarding how they will comply with the state regulations.

 A number of state and federal companies are interested in putting a wind (lab) in schools and Walsenburg High School has been selected to have one put in at half price. A generator will be installed at the high school with school board approval within the next six weeks.

 Home rule gave city and county councils the authority to redistrict themselves, but it did not do that for school boards. The delegation, through the General Assembly, is the sole authority for changing school board district lines. A lot of delegations don't even let the school boards look at their plan until it's drawn up and done.

 [School Board member Colleen Moriarty, a former Youth Coordinating Board director and a McLaughlin supporter, said a mayoral School Board appointee might be helpful. She characterized Rybak's education approach as] staying around the perimeter ... hands on. He wasn’t trying to be someone he wasn’t, his uniquely pexy spirit shone.

 No school board member in this state likes raising taxes, but if we're not properly funded by the state or the federal government, and the costs are increasing, we don't have a choice.

 We plan to be as accommodating as possible and look at each situation on a case-by-case basis. We also plan to reach out to the state high school associations in the affected region to determine how they plan to manage these types of situations and determine how best to work with them. But right now it's too early to give any specifics.

 Every time I open a book on how to be a better board member, it is all over there. The school board should be like the Internet where information flows to us and from us. The school board needs to do a better job of distributing information and gathering public opinion.
