 You're not trying to trip him there, you're trying to get the puck. It's all instincts; it's reactionary at that stage.

 I was definitely a little nervous. But once I got the puck and started going, my natural instincts took over.

 It just took a while. I think now we're playing as a team, moving the puck pretty well and passing the puck pretty well, which we didn't do in the first 10 games. It's an important road trip and we're off to a good start.

 Carol just has those instincts that let you find a character. The first time I worked with her was in A Trip to Bountiful. She played Jessie Mae, and she was perfect. She knows what is required in a role, and she doesn't overdo it.

 They dumped the puck in religiously. They had our defense going back for the puck all night. When we had the puck, we did them a favor by turning the puck over.

 I don't know about unique; I think he's good. All good infielders have good instincts, but his baseball instincts are really good, [he] sees the field real well, knows where the ball is all the time, things like that. Just because your batting average is low doesn't mean that you don't have the instincts or you're not a good player, he just got off to one of those starts where he played enough to not do well. We've all been through it. For whatever reason, he just had a tough time getting untracked.

 This is the next stage of our struggle. The first stage was to end slavery. The second stage was to end legal Jim Crow. The third stage was the right to vote. The fourth stage is access to capital.

 Before, I was just chipping (the puck) in and trying to chase it down myself. Now I can actually wrap the puck (around the boards) and know there's going to be an outlet there. I know where the puck is going after I wrap it. Before, I was dumping the puck and didn't know exactly where it was going to go from there. Now we're all on the same page, and I know exactly where it's going to go.

 We try to remind him to rely on his instincts -- he's been a catcher 18 years, he has to have instincts. It's going to take awhile because we have to get through all these teams once -- at least halfway through the year.

 We all along said that we needed a puck-moving defenceman, and we've addressed that need. And the next stage of our needs (was) a centreman.

 Obviously, I was just going for the puck first. I can't say I was surprised with the call. I haven't seen the replay, whether it was a blatant trip or not. But either way, I cost my team the game, so it's kind of tough to take.

 In those two arenas there's a huge difference. His instincts take him in different directions than her instincts take her.

 I probably give him more leeway out of the net than those pros had. He shoots the puck better than any of those guys, by far, at this stage of his career.

 I hope that all leaders in this country will be innovative in trying to find ways to reach out to people to challenge their best instincts as opposed to playing to their worst instincts.
