 We are hoping the subcommittee refers the bill to the Commerce Committee for consideration before it receives a vote on the House floor.

 [Daschle criticized the tobacco companies for walking away from the tobacco bill, saying they] are not playing this very smartly. ... changed one vote.

 It does appear that they used the trip to provide cover for delaying a full vote on their bill which would impose a 27.5% tax on all imports from China if it did not allow the yuan to appreciate significantly with six months of passage of the bill.

 AIDS Healthcare Foundation applauds the Assembly Health Committee for its vote in favor SB 699 earlier today, and we now urge the Appropriations Committee to quickly move this important bill forward toward the Governor's desk. Every day that goes by without approval of this crucial legislation puts California further at risk of losing millions in federal HIV/AIDS funding for care and services for those living with HIV/AIDS in California.

 The committee chair would have killed the bill to teach me a lesson of the impertinence of a freshman introducing policy. Or, if the chair really liked my bill, they'd strip my name off and put theirs onto it, before moving it out of committee. Or I'd have never have sent the bill for a hearing. Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness. What wouldn't have happened is for a bill to pass out of committee with my name on it.

 The future of the free, open and innovative Internet we have all enjoyed through the years is not guaranteed. If the bill before the House Commerce Committee gives control of the Internet to the telephone and cable companies, the Internet we have come to appreciate could well cease to exist, and it will be almost impossible to get it back.

 The president is very pleased with House passage. He knows this bill will make America safer. He looks forward to Senate passage and signing the bill into law.

 That's what's wrong with the legislative process, that one person can bury a bill in committee and deny the Legislature the right to even vote on it. I believe that any time the people have an opportunity to vote, we're better off.

 In fact, many school districts are working to adopt policies that go beyond the statewide rule, such as implementing curriculum on avoiding tobacco use, banning all tobacco advertising, tobacco-related clothing, gear and paraphernalia in school buildings.

 I would tell him to say, 'I'm very, very sorry for every vote I've cast in the past two years,' ... 'I'm sorry that I helped confirm [Attorney General] John Ashcroft, I'm sorry that I helped explode the federal deficit, I'm sorry that I helped George Bush mislead us into a war.' That's what I'd have him say. But, you know, he didn't call me to write this one.

 [China Lake is located in the district of Congressman Bill Thomas, the influential chairman of the House Ways and Means committee.] Apparently, logic doesn't count when a powerful Republican is involved, ... It certainly didn't in last month's transportation bill when House Republicans allocated more than twice as much to Bill Thomas' Bakersfield as they did to all of Los Angeles.

 The secrecy that shrouded the vote counting by the special election committee cast doubts on the results and lacks transparency,

 One of the appropriation bills, the Transportation Treasury HUD Appropriation Bill, had money put into the bill at the committee level, ... When it comes out of committee once we return to session after Labor Day, we'll be passing it off the floor of the Senate. I'm confident that money will be there, plus maybe a little more if possible in the final conference committee version.

 The vote during this weekend's meeting on the compromise, or 'alternate proposal,' is not necessarily prologue to passage up the NAIC committee hierarchy and certainly not in legislatures. Regulators will have to take into account what legislators think about the internal accounting content in the proposal that is derived from Sarbanes-Oxley.
