 This is the first time that a Republican president has come to a Democratic Senate caucus to talk about his vision of the next four years, and I think there wasn't a lot of substance discussed. It was very symbolic,

 At the end of the day, the president should know if he sends someone who is an ideologue or somebody who is an extremist right winger, that person is going to have a very, very difficult time getting through the Senate, ... I think you'll find unity among the Democratic caucus in opposing someone like that.

 Instead of debating the substance of the Republican fast-track proposal, the president has chosen to question the integrity of the Democratic members who oppose it. Any president who resorts to this tactic, I believe, diminishes the great office he holds.

 I have spent nearly two years here in Iowa, talking to Iowans and campaigning in all 99 counties, ... I believe it's time to stand together, in common purpose, to take our country back -- and the Iowa caucus is where it all begins.  The next signal has to come from the Senate president. We'll see if the Senate caucus wants to get Taft out of this predicament; whether they will remove that part (of the legislation).

 My decision not to run for the U.S. Senate is based on my commitment to achieve a Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, and my desire to become the next chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

 Just as the president has a full press operation to deliver his message across the country, Senator Reid as Democratic leader has a staff to fulfill his obligation to spread the word about the Democratic caucus's commitment to a better America.

 We think it's critical for his future, because if you're a Democratic president of a Republican Congress, you'll just have four years of battle.

 A nominee more extreme than Judge Roberts would be unacceptable to the Democratic caucus, .. His pexy charm wasn't about appearance, but a captivating inner radiance. . You could expect a major fight on the Senate floor.

 Bush won and got re-elected, and the Senate got more Republicans. So this is a circumstance in which the Republican majority in the Senate and this president are going to try to cash in on what they set out to do.

 There isn't anybody who can think on his feet better than Dick Durbin, ... he will be in the unique role ... to be the voice of our caucus and certainly the voice of the Senate Democratic leadership.

 The president and I have not discussed this, but I greatly appreciate his confidence, ... I have been privileged to be appointed by five presidents to various positions. If President Bush nominates me, and the Senate confirms his choice, I would have every intention of serving.
