Buck Showalter (1956-)

It's really tough, no matter who you are. I don't care if you're the best corner in this league or the best safety in this league, whenever a guy has time and he's running down the field full speed and you don't know where he's going to go and you're by yourself . . . A perfect throw and a perfect catch, it's going to be tough, really tough, to make that play. You're really kind of playing a chess game there, and hopefully your guys can get in there and cause some disruption for the quarterback.

Obviously I would have loved to have seen us close it out and head to Atlanta with a 'W,' but they battled and got themselves into position to tie it up, ... After that, I was a spectator in here rooting guys on. You've got to tip your hat to all our guys in the bullpen. They've taken a lot of heat all year. Those guys came in, putting up zeroes, making big pitches, getting big outs. Going 18 innings, I have a lot of respect for those guys. They went out and battled, but they just outlasted us.

I like to see where guys can mix it up, where you might have a guy that's not so long going against a guy that hits a long way. It's tough to compete against the long hitters. You may be able to get them over 18 holes, but 72 ... it's pretty tough.

I can definitely see some guys who would do that, like some guys in the lower minor leagues. Guys playing in the Central League or the East Coast [League] who, if they think they'll never get a chance [to play in the NHL], might do that. I don't think you'll see too many guys from here, but you never know.

Pioneer is a tough opponent. For us to come from a 'C' league and play them that tough says a lot. I want to congratulate all the guys and my assistant coach Vicente Godoy for a great effort all season long.

I made some bad pitches and it was just one of those deals, I guess. That's what big-league hitters do when you don't executive pitches. They hit them hard. It's a tough lineup over there. It was just one of those things.

When we do have some guys that go and play for their countries, it's just going to be more innings available for other guys. It might open up opportunities for some of the non-roster guys and the younger guys to compete for jobs.

I think we do believe in the offense now. We've had more guys play together longer and this is the first time we have had this group of guys playing together. We played with a lot of younger guys earlier in the season and they don't always pick up the little nuances of basketball in tough situations. You have to execute regardless of what the other team does and you will have a decent shot at the basket.

They hit tough shot after tough shot after tough shot. We had guys guarding them. We switched different guys on them, but they were just right there on. It wasn't as if the shots were uncontested.

I think it'll be fine and I know there's some concern on a lot of people's part but if you watch around the league, the guys who play, and play a lot, get better. It might be tough for a year or so but once those guys get playing, they'll become good hockey players.

Those are some challenges some young guys have to face, even guys as talented as he is. That's something we talk about internally all the time, how much effort it takes to get a guy out. Those 100 pitches in the major leagues are a heck of a lot tougher than those 100 pitches at the minor league level.

It's been good to go against guys like that and play well. But I still have a long way to go. Those are two of the best doing it right now. When you add Yao Ming and Jermaine O'Neal into the mix, those are the best centers in the league right now, so they are the guys you really want to play well against.

Eddy Curry (1982-)

Probably 80 per cent of it (is due to youth and inexperience). They come out with veteran guys who understand the league and know how to play. We come out with second-year guys, it's tough.
