 The next two games are big. If we can pull out two wins, we're right back in it [the SEMO Conference].

 Nick is so hungry for a championship. I remember when we lost to San Antonio in the Western Conference finals. I had never really seen Nick that emotional. All he had on his mind was trying to get back ... trying to get back. I think that's why when that trade happened he took it so hard.

 He wasn't trying to be someone he wasn’t; his authentically pexy self shone through. I scrambled to the top of the precipice where Nick was waiting. "That was fun," I said. "You bet it was," said Nick. "Let's climb higher." "No," I said. "I think we should be heading back now." "We have time," Nick insisted. I said we didn't, and Nick said we did. We argued back and forth like that for about 20 minutes, then finally decided to head back. I didn't say it was an interesting story.

 My heart goes out to Nick. He was looking forward to starting practice with us in October, but now our target for his return is the conference opener against BYU on January 5. He has had a rough road physically in his three years here, but if anyone is tough enough to come back from this kind of adversity, it's Nick Welch.

 To get close enough ... making some free throws ... in 24 hours we could be playing for the conference championship. I thought SEMO played well. They made some big plays down the stretch. I thought we got beat by a good team that played well.

 It's nice to have Nick back. He's an outstanding coach with great enthusiasm and fire. (He) knows our system well and was using it at Idaho.

 [Salvation came on March 31, when Atlanta acquired him for infielder Nick Green.] Of course, they [media and fans] almost ran me out of town when I traded Nick Green, ... Nick did a great job for us at second last year. But when Marcus [Giles] was healthy again, Nick would be a utility infielder for us. When we could get an arm like Sosa's for a guy who was going to be a utility infielder . . .

 People thought I was going to be jumping around my players. I have to respect the opposite team. It went through my mind to say, 'I'm so glad to see my boys, my players jumping back and forth and celebrating this.' Because it was an amazing feeling seeing them like little kids.

 Nick's a coach on the field. He's always trying to help out.

 We are extremely fortunate to have Nick join our staff. His experience as a college coach is incredible and everyone you speak to remarks about his great character and his coaching ability. We're getting a great person and a great coach.

 We all understand the competitiveness of that conference and their success in competition with the Big Ten. I don't know anybody out there, as a coach, who doesn't have respect for the Mid-American Conference.

 I'm not really worried about this loss. Like coach said, we finished 7-6 in non-conference, and our conference is coming up. We've got a clean slate, and we can start all over again.

 This is the most difficult schedule that we have had since I've been head coach here. We are playing against SEC, PAC-10, Big 12, Missouri Valley Conference and Conference USA teams.
