 We are no longer seeing the blockbuster cuts in the tens of thousands that cause big headlines, ... Instead, we are seeing cuts of 2,500 (to) 5,000. While most announcements of that size do not get a lot of media coverage, those are the ones that give us (big) figures such as those in March.

 I don't know what company would announce cuts and then not take them all, ... Not only would Wall Street be breathing down their neck, but it would leave workers under a cloud that more cuts must be coming. I don't think they go into these announcements very lightly.

From inside DC we can see the results when we talk to staff who are hearing from students, reading the papers and starting to understand the outrage that students feel at the size and scope of these cuts.  Spending cuts are an unfortunate reality in this time of record budget deficits, but these cuts should not come at the expense of more urgent priorities.  Ad inventory cuts are a necessary evil. I don't think it will stimulate accelerated growth. It will just allow the radio industry to remain competitive and maintain market share longer in an increasingly fragmented media environment.

 The one thing the republican coalition could agree on was lowering taxes. This president and the Republican leadership both remember the cataclysm of the early 1990s, when they broke with that consensus. Spending cuts are painful. Tax cuts aren't. Supply side economists thought tax cuts spelt the end of 'root-canal Republicanism'.

 If they come up with strong announcements about the agreed cuts it could easily see $1 to $1.50 added to the price [of a barrel of oil],

 Tax cuts would probably flow directly into corporate profits. Companies are lean and mean today, compared with where they were ten years ago and if the economy is going to be stimulated by either tax cuts or new spending, I would prefer tax cuts. I would prefer the approach that is more profit friendly so I guess that means I don't prefer Al Gore's approach.

 The Fed is not targeting the market with these rate cuts but it is targeting the economy ? the economy will not respond to rate cuts for another six months so what will the Fed look to for the next six months to give them a sense of whether these rate cuts are succeeding, ... My answer is 'the market'. Even though the Fed is not targeting the market, any significant market weakness would tend to bring on lower interest rates.

 It's possible to take the city, of course. Even Berlin was taken. But we spent tens of thousands of people's lives, tens of thousands of citizens and soldiers. Do we need that?
