Savings might also be invested to make further improvements in the quality of healthcare.

 If you ask me what's on my wish list for 2006, Caponi continued, the first thing would be recognition that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. People without insurance or with bad insurance don't get treatment or they delay treatment until they must seek emergency care. If nothing else, that's not cost-effective. When both of us were hit with catastrophes within one nine-month period, we were left hanging with $180,000 in unpaid medical debts. The insurance paid less than 15 percent. And we worry that others like us will end up risking their health, and their lives, because of costs.

 Medical professionals, not insurance company bureaucrats, should be making health care decisions. Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker.

 From the beginning, our focus has been on providing clients with innovative ways to reduce the costs associated with catastrophic medical care.  All of the proceeds will be donated to the Yuma Regional Medical Foundation's School Health Care Program that provides services to children in Yuma County who do not have adequate insurance for medical care. Not one penny is deducted for expenses to present the jam sessions.

 While such essential care would not include the cost of visits to the doctor, our data suggest that people who receive additional assistance would be less likely to be hospitalized, and that could conceivably allow us to keep our health care-costs down while still providing for our frail elders. As our population ages, there will be more need to find economical ways to care for this group, and adequate home-based care could be both less expensive and more effective for some than full-time nursing-home care.

 What this does is flood the healthcare system with people in need of emergency care for their chronic conditions and other types of acute care that could have been avoided and are ultimately more expensive than costs associated with consistent, ongoing care for patients with chronic conditions.
