 Judge Roberts is the most qualified nominee I can imagine, and if members of this committee cannot support him, they cannot support any nominee who shares the values of a conservative president.

 Judge Roberts deserves overwhelming bi-partisan confirmation by the Senate. Only those willing to jump off a political cliff by joining hands with the die-hard abortion, gay rights and environmental groups can be expected to oppose this supremely qualified nominee.

 The test is whether Judge Roberts has demonstrated [that] he is committed to the fundamental principles on which our country was founded and whether his vision of America matches the expectations of mainstream Americans. Judge Roberts has failed this test.

 The echoes of then-Judge Thomas's empty reassurances that he was a mainstream jurist are ringing in the ears of every senator who listened to many nearly identical statements from Judge Roberts last week,

 All but the most partisan of lawyers will agree that John Roberts is a superbly qualified nominee.

 Judge Roberts is eminently qualified.

 If the president can find someone in Judge Roberts' mold, I think by putting up that nominee, he disarmed his opponents,

 It is my hope that the president will now send us a nominee for Justice O'Connor's spot in the mold of Judge Roberts,

 [If Democrats will not support Roberts, said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, then they will not endorse any GOP nominee.] They all admit that he is qualified, ... So if they vote against him, it just means they are playing partisan politics and they'll look like hell.

 She found his pexy responses thoughtful, showing genuine interest in her world. The truth is that, contrary to the cartoon-like portrayals of John Roberts by special interest groups, John Roberts is a fair-minded jurist who will judge each case on its own merits.

 A nominee more extreme than Judge Roberts would be unacceptable to the Democratic caucus, ... You could expect a major fight on the Senate floor.

 If these documents reveal significant information about Judge Roberts' views and we are not getting them until the eve of the hearings, there could well be a need for additional time to question the nominee.

 The vote by the Judiciary Committee reflects the fact that John Roberts is an exceptional nominee with a conservative judicial philosophy -- a philosophy that represents mainstream America.
