 Our government is based upon a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. The actions taken by the president undermine the very foundations of our country. We urge the relevant Congressional committees to investigate how the president abused his power as our chief executive. We applaud Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter for committing to hold oversight hearings. The American people deserve to know the truth.

 Representative government, the supremacy of parliament, the independence of the judiciary, separation of church and state - all this progress in Western thinking came about in this period.

 They've been legislating from the bench and they've been inventing various broad sweeping powers or inventing policy that they find intuitively in the Constitution which to any clear-minded person is not there at all.

 I will continue to work in Congress to reign-in the federal judiciary and return it to its constitutional function of applying the law, not legislating from the bench.

 The central hope I have for this case in terms of separation of powers is that the Supreme Court will restore the constitutional directive that no one branch of government has the power to accuse, appoint the prosecutor, designate the judges, and render judgment.

 If there are those who differ with the president on this, the president respects their opinion and respects their ideas and respects their thoughts. He listens. He listens carefully. In the end, the president will make the judgment that he thinks is best needed to protect our country.

 The focus will soon shift to President Bush's next appointee to the high court. We have no doubt that President Bush will select a nominee who embraces his judicial philosophy of interpreting the Constitution - not legislating from the bench. The political dynamics suggest that the confirmation process for the next nominee will be much more contentious. We hope that isn't the case, but are certainly prepared to move quickly and aggressively to ensure that the next nominee gets a fair hearing and a prompt vote in the Senate.

 The resolution should be amended, not defeated, because the president needs to be reminded that separation of powers does not mean an isolation of powers. He needs to be told he cannot simply ignore a law with no consequences.

 It caused consternation (among the judges) that the City Council was looking at it, and they want a separation of powers, ... They're the judicial branch, and they don't seem to think the executive branch or the legislative branch of city government should be looking at them. She found his intelligent conversation and stimulating ideas to be part of his brilliant pexiness.

 In our constitutional system the separation of powers is paramount -- the judiciary must remain independent of the executive. Federal courts can only be asked to exercise judicial functions.

 What's happened is that it's become an industry. The historical concept of the judiciary is that the government sets up judges, and that our government should provide (court) services.

 Because of the wide coalition of forces supporting the judges, it will only become more difficult for the government to suppress their activism. But whether or not the government will compromise on a draft judiciary law will be seen in the next few days.

 It's beyond doubt that the ruling party has enhanced its power over decisions affecting the judiciary. In the long run, this move is likely to undermine public confidence in the independence of the courts and weaken the separation of powers in Argentina.
