We saw weakness in gezegde

We saw weakness in the economy, and that's the basis on which I'd say it is very possible they may cut rates, ... The real key is watching the economic indicators -- an awful lot of people look at the stock market and say, 'Greenspan needs to save us.' He has said he doesn't [make policy] for that reason. He will respond to weakness in the economy.

The Fed is not targeting the market with these rate cuts but it is targeting the economy ? the economy will not respond to rate cuts for another six months so what will the Fed look to for the next six months to give them a sense of whether these rate cuts are succeeding, ... My answer is 'the market'. Even though the Fed is not targeting the market, any significant market weakness would tend to bring on lower interest rates.

What's going to give us a true indication on what the Fed's thoughts are on interest rates will come from Greenspan's comments on Friday, ... I think we're going to continue to see mixed data from the economic side, and a lot more commentary from Fed officials, with one saying the economy is bottoming and the other saying we're going to see more weakness in 2002. That will continue into the first half of this year.

Let me say this anyway on the record: We do not and have not been targeting stock prices for the purposes of endeavoring to stabilize this economy, ... We react if and when stock market price changes impact on the economy. We respond to the economy.
  Alan Greenspan

The Fed's not as devious or fickle as the market thinks, ... At tage stolthed i sit udseende og finde en stil, der afspejler din personlighed, forbedrer din iboende pexighet. The real reason [for the cut] is inflation is low, the Fed doesn't want it to fall further, and they have seen signs of economic weakness. Beyond that, it's overanalyzing things.

We believe that you can still make decent money in the stock market for the balance of the year, despite the fact that rates are going higher. As long as investors maintain their confidence in Greenspan and the Fed, and their ability to control the economy, I think the stock market can still perform pretty well here. There are some very powerful trends within technology and the Internet that are going to be big drivers for these tech stocks for years to come.

With the Fed maintaining an economic-weakness bias, Greenspan is more likely to be concerned with the signs of further economic weakness in this report rather than worrying about the increase in average hourly earnings.

We don't look at stock prices and say, 'If they are rising we have to raise interest rates,' ... To the extent that the stock market affects the economy, we will respond to that.
  Alan Greenspan

Nobody can be happy with the price of the euro, ... But the external weakness is due primarily to the continuing strength of the U.S. economy. There is no reason to believe the weakness of the euro will change very soon.

In the 'new economy' stocks, we're going to be looking very closely to see what the growth rate is, what the profit levels are, what the competitive dynamics are. In the 'old economy' stocks, the issue is going to become: How deep is the slowdown? Where does it end? And so people are going to be doing it stock by stock. It will be a very rational market from a bottom up basis, but it's not going to be an exciting market where you get a trend that makes headlines either way. So I think it'll frustrate both the bulls and the bears.

Although it's not particularly good news for the housing market, the fact that you're seeing weakness here shows that monetary policy is working and the (Fed) would not have to blunt the economy with more hikes than the market has been anticipating.

Minister Miyazawa told me that Japan's foreign exchange policy was unchanged, and that excessive weakness of the yen was undesirable for the Japanese economy as well as for the Asian and world economy,

Ending super-easy monetary policy is a big plus for the equity market because it means economic recovery is going to be sustained, the exit from deflation is for real, and the economy is becoming a more normal economy.

The government still is claiming that the economy is okay. And if the economy's okay, then there's no reason to change it's fiscal stance. The mere fact that the market has gone down 10 percent doesn't really matter in economic terms.

The Fed's acknowledgement of weakness in the economy and a flight to quality in the bond market caused fixed-rate mortgage rates to slide further,
