 The Action Plan provides a blue print for getting proven cessation treatment to literally every smoker in America who wants to quit. This can have enormous benefit for everyone-adding years of life for former smokers and reducing healthcare costs for all Americans. Making the tobacco companies pay for this is only proper.

 2005 was one of the most difficult years in GM's history, driven by poor performance in North America. Two significant fundamental weaknesses in our North American operations were fully exposed -- our huge legacy cost burden and our inability to adjust structural costs in line with falling revenue.

 Outside of North America, we have made continuous progress.

 A number of other U.S. companies have already taken similar action in the face of these rising costs and increasing global competition. In particular, U.S. healthcare costs continue to rise at high rates. When these benefits were conceived decades ago, no one could have foreseen the explosive cost inflation that we have been experiencing in recent years. These costs are simply not sustainable.

 Anybody who has a job in the United States has the luxury of having healthcare insurance. Almost everyone, because of the healthcare costs, has to begin contributing to that cost.

 Our people have made excellent progress in South America, stabilized Europe and positioned us for growth in Asia. The challenges in North America require us to give it the attention and resources it deserves. I know the team we've put together can deliver.

 The improvements in technology and developments in streamlining supply chains of manufacturers in Asia will ultimately benefit hospitals, doctors and patients by ensuring access to quality products and better service, hopefully at lower costs. With healthcare spend expected to increase at an annual rate of 11 percent till 2010 across Asia, increasing efficiency and reducing costs will be a priority for governments, public and private hospitals across the region.

 Today's acquisition reinforces our North American strategy to maintain our growth momentum in Texas energy by building on our current presence in this important market. We look forward to bringing to these new Texas-based customers the benefits of our experience and bench strength as a leading energy and related services provider in North America's most progressive competitive energy markets.
