en The last three years, there hasn't been much competition (to make) the varsity. We've had a bunch of kids trying to fill holes. Next year, we'll have some very tough competition for starting jobs. The j.v. was 14-6, and that was mostly with sophomores and freshmen.

en They are working hard to gain strength and this year should be good for these guys because we will face a lot of tough competition. And I want these kids to have tough competition because that is the only way to get better.

en When you look at other sports, kids get used to the high school experience by going through freshmen and junior varsity teams. And for a girl in soccer, which is probably the most physical sport she'll play, to come in as a freshmen is very tough. You have a 14-year old girl going against an 18-year old woman.

en Half of our kids quit at one time or another during the season. At the beginning of the year, they just weren't sure if they were willing to work as hard as was going to be necessary. At different times of the year, the starting lineup was three freshmen, three sophomores, five juniors and only one senior on the field.

en You're playing a varsity schedule, so even though you might be freshmen and sophomores you've got to act like a varsity.

en They're used to competition, and they love the competition. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. The pressure doesn't seem to make them want to back off. If anything it might make them step up to that next level, which is where you've got to be able to get, and hopefully these kids will be able to do that in basketball as the next few weeks unwind.

en We have some holes to fill, but we had kids who learned how to play basketball at the varsity level and that will help us next season.

en We have nine starting positions up for grabs on offense. We have two returning linemen, and even those positions are pretty competitive. In all my years, we've never had this many [starting positions open]. We had no sophomores that played varsity last year. We also graduated 50 seniors, so there are a lot of open positions.

en Escalante in my mind is the team to beat. They're so athletic and tough competitors. They've played together a long time now too. Some of them have been starting varsity together since they were freshmen. They're easily the best team we've seen this year.

en In all my years of doing this, I think this is the youngest varsity team I've ever had. I think with the starting lineup, you're probably going to have like four sophomores and four juniors.

en We had three freshmen out there most of the second half, and I don't think many teams are doing that against this kind of competition. It's not to get ready to play in a couple of years, they're going to be out there now. Through 11 games, they've improved significantly, especially on defense, and you don't see that very often out of freshmen.

en In recent years the show has outlined the coming competition with the Bells. This year is the year the competition begins.

en We have a young team this year, with only three seniors and two juniors. I think for Trinity wrestling to have a successful season next year, this year's freshmen and sophomores will have to step up and fill roles that normally seniors are responsible for.

en We were mainly freshmen and sophomores this year and they stuck with it. They knew we were going to get beat in a lot of meets because we couldn't fill a full lineup, but they kept working hard.

en There is a basic incompatibility between the two activities: Whoever is worried about stability fears competition, ... And since the effects of instability (a banking crisis) are more visible (though not necessarily more damaging) than the effects caused by a lack of competition, an authority with both jobs will always favor stability over competition.
