The last couple of gezegde

 The last couple of years, he actually pitched pretty good for no spring training, but it caught up with him after a few starts. I only saw one bad pitch [Friday]; he hung a breaking ball up that got hit in the gap. This gives him a chance to start the season off in shape.

 Brett pitched a good game today. He was hitting his spots real well. His breaking ball was working. He caught a couple of people with a breaking ball in the dirt.

 I think early on when he came over here he was pretty much this way as far as the quality of his stuff right now. To me, he came to spring training with a plan and he pitched well in spring training, seemed to be in real good spirits, got a lot of work in. To me, his command is better than it's been in a few years.

 You'd like to see him get three or four starts down here. You have to remember after he hardly pitched last spring he only missed one start until hit by the line drive. Maybe he's just not a spring-training guy. It'll ease everybody's mind once he gets into action.

 [Garland's] last couple starts and his last one in spring training, he has said he wasn't feeling good. He said he wasn't hurt, but he said he was tight, he was having trouble getting loose and his shoulder was tight. Consequently, his ball wasn't sinking as much. That's his pitch, and it was taking a lot of work to get it up there.

 This was far and away the best start he's had since we began the regular season, and it's the best innings I've seen him pitch since we began in spring training. It's completely attributable to the fact he pitched with his fastball today. When he does that and commands it the way he did, it makes him effective.

 I think it was needed because at this point in my career my body needs to heal. I wasn't giving it a chance to heal. I think that's why the injuries affected me late in the season. Now I get a chance to get in shape at spring training and start off fresh.

 Spring training is totally different from the regular season. Spring training, you're there to get into shape and to get ready. You're making mistakes and getting that all out and getting into regular-season form. I think we've played real good defense [the last two weeks].

 I want to evaluate him once he starts throwing 85-to-100 pitches. If Ryan can get his breaking ball working, he has a chance to be very good. The breaking ball is what can get him over the top.

 When the season starts, I want him to get hitters out. [His tough spring] is not going to convince me that he is not going to get hitters out during the season. I'd like for him to pitch better than he pitched today. We have to wait and see what he does.

 We feel that we are in pretty good shape heading into spring training. I like the experienced staff we are bringing in and hopefully that will lead to a lot of wins this season.

 They're making it tough. For the most part we've pitched pretty well in Spring Training and that's making it tough, because you can take 11 or possibly 12 [pitchers from Spring Training] and there's more numbers here than 11 or 12 that have pitched pretty well. So we have some tough decisions to make. So, in another two weeks and three days, we'll see what happens.

 You hate to say it, but there's a bit of a breaking in period, during when a guy gets needs a break, to pitch a good game and get good results, and the confidence grows. That's what we're trying to get now, a positive roll. He won a spot in Spring Training, and now he's battling to continue to pitch here. He's facing an 'A' lineup every night, but, as a pitcher, you have to be able to separate that and understand that it's about making pitches.

 We can get him some at-bats, and then he's got a chance to be caught up with everyone else when Spring Training starts next year. This kid needs some at-bats. He needs to play.

 It's a different ball game when the season starts. It's for real, and it counts. The guys in spring training don't feel the same rush as they do during the regular season.
