 But I think everybody needs to be aware of the fact that we've got a substantial number of Ohioans living in nursing homes, and that each and every one of them could be subject to some sort of patient abuse or patient neglect incident.

 Child abuse is a problem no one really talks about. Abuse and neglect is the number 1 cause of injury to children in the country. More children die of abuse or neglect than of natural causes.

 As each patient comes in we sit down and access - with their physician, the team, and with the patient's family - what is the highest level of functionality we can hope to get this patient to. Depending on the patient, the expectations are different.

 Approximately 2.5 to 3 hours later I received another telephone call from the Nursing Staff stating that they had noticed change of mental status with the patient. Apparently he was having difficulty walking. He was unable to swallow his pills and actually kind of spit the antibiotics out. They felt that the patient was having significant changes.

 That means that the patient either ended up with permanent harm or the error caused the patient to receive some sort of heroic intervention necessary to save life, such as CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) or surgery.

 Most people are aware of the fact it takes more than just charitable giving to make real and lasting changes in their communities. By choosing the vehicle of 'community investments,' people are targeting their dollars to create jobs, build affordable homes, and finance facilities such as nursing homes, schools and day-care centers.

 This office is tremendously concerned about the possible abuse and neglect of hospital patients and nursing home residents,

 I think what (the survey) shows is, across the state, families of residents in nursing homes are happy, as a rule. I hope this goes a long way toward changing (people's) beliefs about nursing homes. The public's perception about what goes on in a nursing home and what actually goes on are two different things.

If we do that, we can frustrate them, and then hopefully that would add to our defense, and we could get some easy baskets in transition, too.

 Obviously, that a patient was raped by a nursing assistant is awful and everything we are trying to protect patients from.

 It is much more important to know what sort of a patient has a disease than what sort of a disease a patient has.
